I know what you're thinking .. if I took out all the non book related items I could just fill the cabinet wall to wall with books .. very true too but I have to have lots of stuff around me or else life crumbles. It used to be only the bottom shelf that was devoted to books so more have crept in though I think I've posted this before but couldn't find it when trawling back. The 'Pride & Prejudice' bunting is new .. I made it myself :D

This pic is dedicated to all the book organizers out there ... something to keep you awake at night :D

PS: I should have got a map 'R' by now .. so it reads 'book lover' .. but I haven't got around to it yet :blush2:

That's beautiful :)! I like the little things in there that aren't books, I do that too but in most cases I've run out of space (there are still some things there, though). 'Book love' without the 'R' works well too, even if that isn't what's intended by the makers. You've invented a new phrase, book love. It's what we all feel towards our books.

Thanks Gaia xx I bought the map letters one by one ... or at least I bought 'book' and then 'love' at a later date .. they have maps of all our special places on them because you can specify   I like clutter .. I couldn't be minimalist if my life depended on it (you'd never guess would you?). Alan's had the figurine of Mr Pickwick for years .. he bought it at an old antiques fair when he used to have a whole collection of Dickens books .. he gave them away at a later date :o

The cabinet has doors and when they're closed you won't be able to see the extra 'R' .. so that's what's delaying me .. I know what I mean by it anyway :D

I love it too! I also mix little nick nacks among my books too. I have a thing for hearts as you know, so i have these little hearts scattered around the shelves.

The coloured shelf has got worse :blush2: I have sharpened it up. The books on the top right are temporary as I have quite a few books with peach coloured covers which I want to put there but haven't got enough yet :blush2: .. I'm sorry about my relatives .. I usually move them for pics but this is what it looks like normally.

The little bookshelf has been posted here before but has changed slightly too .. I've taken all my Persephone books off of it because they're to be put in our bedroom now it's decorated .. when the shelf gets built/bought that is *impatient tapping of fingers* :D

Those little piles of books are everywhere .. anywhere there is a space :blush2:

Alan has just bought a lot of oak shelves from someone who has moved house and he is promising to build me some bookshelves in our little attic room :yahoo: .. some serious nagging will probably have to take place and possibly more food bribery but before too long .. I might have some wall to wall shelves  .. they'll only be low ones as it's for under the eaves but still .. lots of book room. When those shelves are built and I get the task of filling them .. well .. you'll hear the squeals of joy from there :giggle:

It's great to hear about your little things, I love that :)

So pretty! I could just look at your shelves for a while.. I hope you enjoy your attic shelves! It sounds awesome :) (hope you can bribe him).

Oh, the attic shelves sound lovely!  And, your pics are great.  I have some knick knacks in front of some books, and a few on top of the books, like small stuffed animals, but that's it.

Poppyshake, just beautiful! I love the look of all your knick knacks (is that a proper word for them, I hope it's not a disparaging word. And now I wonder if disparaging is the proper word ). It's important to have bookcases that are beautiful, too! I just don't have the room myself. Although actually now I have a lot of pictures set on some of the shelves on my big bookcase, having taken all the books off it. But it's soon going to a recycling center... :/

Yep, 'disparaging' is the right word in that context, but you needn't worry about that because 'knick knacks' is not a disparaging term. :) Have more confidence in your abilities, woman!

Poppyshake, your bookshelves are so gorgeous! You make me tempted to reorganise all of mine into colours or heights or series... Like Athena, I like hearing the stories behind your knick knacks. And I also agree that it isn't vital to have the 'R' there because 'book love' is a lovely term in itself. I just have one small recommendation to make: the coloured shelf would look just a bit nicer without 'How I Live Now' on it. :P

I love the idea of having little piles of books scattered around the house, but if I tried it, it would probably look messy (mostly because the rest of my place is messy). Also, I would feel weird separating some books from their friends on the shelves. Damn my inflexibility!

I can't wait to see your new attic shelves! Nag away, Poppyshake! The sooner you wear Alan down, the sooner we can see your pretty new shelves. Remind him that many people are waiting for your shelving to go up, not just you!  :giggle2:

I've only heard the term 'knick knacks' used twice or so, so I really had no idea if it something positive or negative. To my non-native ear it sounds disparaging  But I was on a break and didn't have time to look up some other word, so I decided to go with it and just mention that I mean it in a good way :D

Thanks frankie :friends0: .. and as far as your grammar is concerned .. Kylie has said it all VVVVV (I am insisting on having shelves built in the attic so it will tempt you to come .. I won't be happy until you have seen them :) I will fill them all up for now but promise to pack some away in boxes so you have nice empty spaces to fill  .. I know how the mistress went about tempting you and I intend to follow her lead :D)

Yes .. you must come too to see my new shelves .. just believing that you will gives me greater nagging power :D We have a visitor this weekend (not a book lover :( so she won't be excited about shelves :D) but Alan says he will get on with building them after her visit .. which could mean anything from Monday to next Christmas :D They are on 'the list' now though so :boogie:

I have no heart .. I am always separating books from their friends :D .. and they probably don't get on with some of their fellow bookpilers. I took a Jasper Fforde away from his friends because I needed his particular shade of green :giggle: .. he does ruin the effect though with his great big writing :D

I would love, love, love a whole room devoted to books .. like you have but that ain't gonna happen here :( .. so I just have to keep piling them up. It's possible that when the attic shelves are built I'll have less random piles around the place but they'll soon start creeping back once I've filled the shelves up :giggle2: I had another idea for a bookcase .. I saw it in a mag and am now nagging Alan (all I do is nag .. this is why I have to make the 'I Love You' pies :D) to make me something similar .. perhaps even making two shelves within a frame (and oh lord! .. now I've been to the site I've seen some lovely doggy bookends :blush2:) .. he didn't totally throw the idea out so that's encouraging .. I just need to wheedle a bit now and cajole (and no-one wheedles and cajoles quite like me .. I could run the website :D) .. possibly I will also have to get Claire on my side as she has even greater persuasive powers :D The pair of us together are unstoppable.

I've just posted this on my bookblog .. it's not a new shelf but it is a new colour :blush2: The shelf is in our bathroom and, I thought, it needed to be painted pink! :D

That is just the cutest thing ever!

Thank you emelee :)

Alan has built a bookcase for the attic now. Bit of a nightmare as the room isn't level but you'll have to ignore all the odd angles :D Also, it will be painted eventually but, of course, as soon as it was even half erected I started filling it with books :giggle: Apparently we can't have them wall to wall as we need to access all the ... junk :D but Alan is going to possibly build cupboard doors or something to finish it off properly. Now I've practically filled it as you can see but there is another bookcase going up on the wall in .. well this room .. that I'm currently sitting in (you can see me .. yes? :D) .. so some of the books in the attic will come down here and I'll have space .. which I can start filling :D

I have mixed all the colours together so you see .. I'm not ill after all :giggle2:

Ooh, it looks so lovely, Poppyshake! Do you ever read in there? It looks like a lovely reading place with all that natural light.

It is my guest room .. especially waiting for Australian and Finnish guests  :D:friends0:

I do read in there because there is a lovely daybed to sit on .. which you can just see part of in the pic (and it has a hidden bed underneath .. so TWO beds :D) but I would like to get a little armchair and footstool for it one day so I can really get comfy with a book.

It's a lovely warm room .. sometimes too warm in summer but in autumn/winter it comes into it's own because it's so snug.

I could easily clear it of books ... if anyone needed the space for their purchases .. just saying ;)

You mean those books won't be available for your guests to take home? I thought that was my welcome gift to entice me to visit.  :giggle:

Poppyshake, I love that room!! When I come and visit, I don't think I'll ever want to leave... Are you still sure you want me to come and visit? :D I think we also need a bowl for Chewy... Two! For food and water. He can sleep in my bed

:D I'll let you fill one small bag .. not a trolley though  :D

Your new bookcase is beautiful Kay :)! It makes the guest room look very homely, in my opinion.

Thanks Gaia .. it does make it seem more homely now .. there were books up there before but all on tottering piles :D

Right two bowls for Chewy :)... ermm  will you need bowls frankie? :D  :friends0: I want you to be comfy and all that :D

PS: I definitely DO want you to come and Chewy can't wait :D Alan says we must take him .. that is Chewy .. on literary walks .. and re-enact doggy scenes .. that is Chewy again .. not us :giggle2: .. I am struggling to think of any doggy scenes .. I only came up with the one in Rebecca where .. the new Mrs de Winter takes Jasper for a walk only he bounds off and when she goes searching for him she happens upon Ben .. the local .. weirdo hermit who puts the fear of God in her .. I don't think I want to re-enact that and Chewy says he's not keen either  :D

Oh yes I know .. not strictly in the book but it's all the same .. I'll be Elizabeth Bennett playing with the dog whilst Colin Firth Mr Darcy observes us .. admiringly .. from the bathroom window .. where he is *feels faint* .. towelling himself .. dry :blush2:

Beautiful Kay!  What a great reading room.......even warm in the summer, the light must be perfect!
