This ir really hard to pin down some of my favorites as there are so many good writers working at the moment. And this thread does say authors, so I'm including Straczynski on the strength of his non-fic book about writing. And his run on the Spider-Man monthly. :D

Nobody has mentioned E A Prolux yet. I've found all her books to be wonderful reads.

And reading this thread reminds me I must get round to re-reading Paul Auster's Timbuktu and start on some of Jhumpa Lahiri's novels!
