Jedclark Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Any good fantasys' to read? I'm getting bored of reading Harry Potter over and over again and I'm looking for something new to read that is good... Anyone got any sort of idea, just reply to this forum Quote
~Andrea~ Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions. I have been told that if you like Harry Potter you'll probably like Ender's Game, written before Harry Potter, but with some similarities. Don't know who it's by, have a look on Amazon. Quote
Severnlad Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Book of Lost Things - John Connolly. I would say this falls into that category - a great read. Quote
Kell Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is always good. Quote
Tambo Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar saga is quite good. Quote
frankie Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next -series, starting with The Eyre Affair. Quote
Kylie Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer seems pretty popular these days! Quote
Kell Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next -series, starting with The Eyre Affair. The Princess Bride, by William Goldman. Ooh, yes - I highly recommend both those choices. Excellent reading all round! Quote
Stephanie2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is always good. I can remember trying to read the first one of these a few years ago, because I had the computer game. I couldn't get into it. But I might try and read it again. Quote
Kell Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 The first two in the series (in my opinion) are the worst of the bunch. The series gets MUCH better later on. You could always start with the 3rd one (Equal Rites) which is the first appearance of Granny Weatherwax (who later develops into a major character on the Disc), or the fourth one (Mort) which stars Death and his assistant (Death also develops greatly after this book). Both are the starting points for "threads" within the series (namely the Witches and the Death books respectively). I never liked the Rincewind books as much as the others. Quote
ChrisJ Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Neil Gaiman- Neverwhere. Really good read think it was a T.V programme in the 90's as well. Quote
Kell Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Ooh, yes - Neverwhere was good. The TV programme came first (if I remember correctly) and then Gaiman wrote the book to expand upon it a little. There's a BEAUTIFUL illustrated version you can get now too. I've also just started reading Stardust by Neil Gaiman. I wasn't overly impressed with the film, but so far the book has all the markings of a great fantasy/fairytale... Quote
ChrisJ Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Would love the illustrations of Mr Croup and Vandemeer. American gods by gaiman is very good as well. Been avoiding seeing Stardust as prefer to read the book first will get there eventually. Quote
ChrisJ Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 By the way Kell... Thank you for your welcome message on profile could'nt figure out how to reply to it..but thanks anyway. Quote
Stephanie2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I have seen Stardust and loved the film but can't get into the book so I'm the opposite of Kell. I think I will try to forget the film and start. Like I say, it doesn't help that I loved the film. Quote
ChrisJ Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I think the only film i like better than the book is 'Shawshank Redemption' from Stephen King novella 'Rita Haworth and the Shawshank Redemption' The film is great. Quote
HurryHeathen Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 I enjoyed the Shannara Series by Terry Brooks its got a decent amount of books in the series, so I recommend you be committed before reading it. Quote

wordsgood Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 For anyone who liked these ones, Terry Brooks has recently revived this series for the 2nd time in the last several years. Here is the link to his official website. The link I'm using should take you directly to the page on it listing all of his published work thus far, including all of the Shannara series. http://www.terrybrooks.net/novels.html I enjoyed the Shannara Series by Terry Brooks its got a decent amount of books in the series, so I recommend you be committed before reading it. 13ofHEARTS Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Well, the original Deltora Quest series is really good. It's more so geared to a younger generation as I first read it when I was 12 or 13 years old. But I read through it again earlier this year, and I still enjoyed it. Quote
grabit Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 (edited) A Song of Ice and Fire (4 books out so far, one book is in two parts) by George R R Martin. it's not finished yet, but there's a lot of words to read in the meantime.. this is one of the very best series in fantasy today. IMHO. Edited September 19, 2008 by grabit Quote
Anomander_Rake Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 Try Steven Erikson-Gardens of the moon. A complex and addictive read. Quote
