One rainy evening, a charming and handsome young stranger fresh off the boat from England pitches up to a counting house on Golden Hill Street, with a suspicious yet compelling proposition -- he has an order for a thousand pounds in his pocket that he wishes to cash. But can he be trusted? This is New York in its infancy, a place where a young man with a fast tongue can invent himself afresh, fall in love, and find a world of trouble . . . This kept me turning the page to find out what happened next and none of it was predictable. Well written, well constructed and totally believable and every bit as excellent as the above implies. Recommended.
Jennifer Newbold
I am surprised that no one else has commented about this book! I devoured it -- I don't think I did anything else on the day I read it. I second the recommendation, and I can't improve on the above description. One of my recent favourites.
