Odd book memory

Hi, odd request. I am trying to find a book I read years ago, I have a distinct memory of a sea monster/giant shark swimming alongside a submarine, causing it to be knocked off course, and causing a crew member to be killed by being hit in the face by the microscope he was looking into. I thought it was Meg, by Steven Alten, but it wasn't. Any ideas?
