Adam Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 I am not sure how big Oprah is across the sea, but here in North America she is HUGE! Oprah has claimed she is a big time reader and she started a book club to share all the books she reads. She interviews the authors and talks about the books. If you glance through the archive there are many good reads. I have read a few from her book club and I have never been disapointed with one of her picks. I just thought I would share this, maybe you guys might find your next read! http://www.oprah.com/obc/obc_landing.jhtml Quote
Kell Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 Well, there's only one on this year's list that I'd be particularly interested in - Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I have Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy on my shelf (from her 2005 choices), as well as East of Eden by John Steinbeck (2003 choice), and Daughter of Fortune by Isabelle Allende (2000 choice) I have The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingslover (2000 choice) currently winging its way to me courtesy of Book mooch. There aren't many on her list, though, that really grab me. Richard and Judy seem to be our equivalent with their book club - I seem to have slightly more success with their list, but again, fewer than half of their choices actually appeal to me... Quote
SteffieB Posted October 18, 2007 Posted October 18, 2007 I see some of my favorite authors on that list! And I really think Wally Lamb is so good. Hm..maybe Oprah and I are more alike than I thought:mrgreen: Quote
angerball Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 The only books on that list I've read are She's Come Undone, and The Pilot's Wife, both of which I really enjoyed. I don't really follow Oprah much, mainly because her show isn't on here in the UK (or is it?). A lot of those, I haven't even heard of. Quote
Echo Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 The only one on the list I've read is The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. And I don't watch Oprah much, either. Quote
Louiseog Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Suppose our equivalent in Richard and Judy, who do two book lists a year. They seem to have more of a mixture of genre in a year than Oprah. Middlesex in on the shelf. Have tried to read The Poisonwood Bible twice and failed! Quote
SteffieB Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 I watch Oprah I grew up north of Chicago and had the opportunity to go to an Oprah show once -- it was such an experience! She's pretty cool:D Quote
