The spy

I am new on this forum.

I am reading the book of paulo coelho titled the Spy, on the first paragraphe of this book i dont understand this sentence : "I have always been an optimistic women, but time has left me bitter, alone, and sad. "

I can't find the relation between the first part of the sentence (optimism) and the seconde one (time).

No it is not for school assiggnment.

In that case, I expect the reason of why the woman has become sad and bitter over time, will be explained in the book somewhere. But I haven't read the book, so I can't tell you for sure.

I would agree with Athena. It sounds like the first line is an opening gambit - I imagine that the rest of the book describes why and how she goes from being optimistic to sad.
