Oblomov Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 I am sure that every one of us readers have come across some really strange and unlikley names for characters in various books. Which one would you say is the most preposterous name of them all? Personally, I have never seen anything to beat MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR of Catch 22. Quote
Laramie Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 this is the name of a horse is the Pellinor series - ish, anyway, here it is: Maninae!! pronounced: Man-in-eye-ee:lol: I always sing it like "galileo" thing. :lol:I love that name! Another pretty weird one: Saliman. I love the names in the Pellinor series! Quote
Mia Posted September 30, 2007 Posted September 30, 2007 I was browsing in a cheapy books shop on Saturday, picked up a likely book and opened it at random to see if I liked the writing style and whether it caught my interest (I always do this with unfamiliar authors). Anyway, the name of the lead character leapt off the page at me: Champagne D'Vyne! It might have been tongue-in-cheek (it was chick-lit I think), but I just couldn't bring myself to buy a book with a character name like that in it! Quote
Kell Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 I always thought the name Humbert Humbert (from Lolita) was a truly ridiculous name, but at the same time, it really suits the character... Quote
wrathofkublakhan Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 I always thought that "Ghisteslwchlohm" from the Riddle Master of Hed trilogy was a bit much. I think the author did too, she called him Master Ohm for much of the book, resistance is futile! Quote
Adam Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 In Fools Die by Mario Puzo there was a character called Cully. I always found that name to be odd. Quote
~Andrea~ Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 You have obviously never read cosmicomics by Italo Calvino. All the names look like a cat ran over the keyboard. Quote
Janet Posted October 6, 2007 Posted October 6, 2007 Most of the names in Wicked by Jilly Cooper! Quote
