I read a book when I was younger, late 90s early 00s (although may have been published earlier) about a hierarchical society where people had to take tests to determine what job they would get. I.e people who passed were given top jobs and the best houses, and children had to take tests to get them to the next step in life. One of the children rebeled against the system and questioned the logic of the society. I remember really enjoying it, but I can't for the life of me remember who it was by or what it was called!

Sounds a bit like the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth, but the first book (Divergent) was published in 2011, so that's too late.

Definitely a Dystopian novel, but do you think it was an adult story or one aimed at teens (YA)? That might help narrow it down. I thought at first it might be Molly Zero by Keith Roberts, published in 1980  .

edit. Actually just read a bit of a review of it on amazon and it looks like Molly Zero could fit your bill.
