Michelle
I've read the first two books in this series, Angelfall and World After, and they managed to completely surprise me. As much as I love YA, these days I tend to avoid any with a hint of teen romance. For some reason, I assumed Angelfall would be all about a romance between an angel and a human, but when I was finally persuaded to give it a go, I was proved wrong! Angelfall It has been six weeks since the angels returned to Earth and destroyed the world as we knew it. When they fly away with a helpless little girl, her sister Penryn will do anything to get her back... The author throws you straight into this world, with angels who are certainly not the good guys we believe them to be. Most humans are in fear of their lives, living day to day with limited food and shelter, whilst the angels see them only as slaves to be captured. Penryn's sister is captured when she witnesses a fight between some angels. The one left behind is badly injured, so she manages to capture him - hoping that he can lead her to where her sister is being held. Over time, a strange truce happens between them, and she finds out more about the angels and what's happening. There is no romance in the traditional sense, and it's made clear that humans and angels are forbidden to be together. But.. well, let's just say I developed my own little crush on Raffe! Towards the end of the book, there's an increase in action, and even a level of horror, and, unusually for me, I went straight to amazon to get hold of the second book! World After The survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what's left of the modern world. I am always concerned about the second book in a series, but this one carried on with the same quality as Angelfall. There was plenty of story to tell, and didn't feel like a 'filler book' before the finale (I think it's a trilogy). Obviously I can't go into details of the plot, but it has shown that the series continues to be strong, and I would recommend it. (I'm constantly begging the publishers for an early glimpse of The End of Days!)
Weave
Great reviews Michelle, I have the first two books, I am going to read them all when the third book is released.
Felidae
Have seen these books come round and round again on Goodreads (cant search for apocalyptic books without running into them I guess) but the last thing I was looking for (and expecting in these books) were books with too much teen romance and angels falling in love with humans. But it's not about that? Heh.. I was expecting something like, big bad angels coming to earth and one runs into human girl, she seems special, angel falls in love with her even though it's not done/forbidden, blablabla.. it's not that? Then I'd might give them a go If there is not too much sappiness. Do you spell it that way?
Michelle
Yep! There is an aspect of the falling in love bit, I don't think it can be avoided - but it's done well, and I was very surprised how much I enjoyed the books. I really do steer clear of romance in my YA books these days, but these two worked for me.
Nollaig
Well I'm intrigued... do you think I'd like them, Michelle?
Michelle
Erm... we often disagree on books, so I'm not sure. I was surprised by them though, and am excited about the 3rd...
Nollaig
That's why I'm hesitant haha I can be overly critical of YA books... but angels! Mean angels! I love mean angels! I got the first book anyway just on my tablet, so I'll give it a go and see what happens
