My Kindle Paperwhite updated itself a few weeks ago, after I accidentally forgot to turn off the wifi (I normally have it turned off when I read, unless I want to download a new book onto it). I turned on the wifi, download the new book I bought and started to read it, then after a while the Kindle suddenly turned itself off with a bar installing a new update.

It seems quite a bit has changed (I don't think I've ever done an update), there are more options and highlighting for example is a lot easier now. I still have to get used to the new position of the highlight option but it seems easier now so I think this update was a good thing :).

I just wanted to ask, do you often get updates on your e-reader?

I have a Paperwhite but I don't recall mine doing an update. Unless it did, and didn't notify me. :o  What version is the software on yours? Mine is 5.4.5.1. I've just looked it up and that's the latest version, so it probably happened automatically (I often just leave the WiFi on). I haven't actually noticed any changes though.

I had that happen to me once when I had a Papperwhite.  It didn't seem to change anything, but I have never mastered the highlighting option :blush2:  :o

It says 5.4.4.2 which Amazon says is the newest version. I don't know what it was before, but it's a first generation Kindle Paperwhite, never updated, and has now updated with features that were introduced with the second Kindle Paperwhite, such as GoodReads. I don't mind though, I was just surprised.

Anyone get the letter with the details for the Kindle Fire update happening (to Fire OS 4) in the next few weeks?  I wish there was an opt out button, I hate updates.

How do you find out what version you're on, on the paperwhite?

From the home page on your kindle go into 'Menu' and then 'Settings'. Once there open up the menu again and click 'Device Info'.

Neither of us have received any notification.  One good thing about updates is that many times security flaws are fixed.  Unfortunately, a necessary evil.
