Storynutter Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Hi Everyone I'm new to this forum. I love reading, but I haven't really found any books that have grabbed my attention or kept my attention, so here I am If you could suggest some books to read or send your top 5 books that would be much appreciated. Athena Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I saw you tagged this post with vampires, werewolves and witches, does this mean you want to know about urban fantasy / paranormal books? I don't read a lot of those (I have some on my TBR, to-be-read pile though). Here are some of my recommendations: High fantasy: David B. Coe - The Lontobyn Chronicles series James Clemens - The Banned and the Banished series Anne McCaffrey - The Dragonriders of Pern series Terry Goodkind - Sword of Truth 1: Wizard's First Rule Terry Pratchett's books, in particular: Terry Pratchett - Discworld 1: The Colour of Magic Terry Pratchett - Discworld 2: The Light Fantastic Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - Wheel of Time series Peter V. Brett - The Demon Cycle series Ursula K. Le Guin - Earthsea Cycle 1-4: The Earthsea Quartet Joanne Harris - Runemarks 1: Runemarks Karen Miller - Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series Yahtzee Croshaw - Mogworld George R. R. Martin - A Song of Ice and Fire series These are all sort of high fantasy and most involve magic (wizards and/or witches). Since you also tagged this post with science-fiction, here are some of my science-fiction reads: Tad Williams - Otherland series (this one I classify as both fantasy and science-fiction) Douglas Adams - The HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy series Dan Simmons - Hyperion 1-2: The Hyperion Omnibus Peter F. Hamilton - The Night's Dawn series Elizabeth Moon - The Speed of Dark Daniel Keyes - Flowers for Algernon Arthur C. Clarke - The Other Side of the Sky Iain M. Banks - Culture 2: The Player of Games Below are some young-adult books that are either fantasy or science-fiction and that I really enjoyed: J. K. Rowling - Harry Potter series (fantasy) Suzanne Collins - The Hunger Games series (dystopian) Maria V. Snyder - Study series and Glass series (fantasy) Veronica Roth - Divergent series (dystopian) A series I read that's about a witch: Cate Tiernan - Sweep series (in Dutch this is called the Wicca series) I read them when I was a teenager so I don't remember a whole lot, but I liked them. I have more books on my TBR (to be read) that've got good recommendations from other people but since I haven't read them yet I can't wholeheartedly recommend them. I hope you find something you like . Quote

Signor Finzione Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 (edited) I would definitely second Athena's recommendations of George RR Martin, Terry Pratchett, Peter V. Brett and JK Rowling, as well as Vimes' recommendation of Robin Hobb. If you're after fantasy, I'd also suggest trying something by Raymond E. Feist (my favourites are the Empire trilogy, and Magician), as well as maybe Blood Song by Anthony Ryan and Malice by John Gwynne. The Sabriel trilogy by Garth Nix is also very good. I don't read much about vampires and werewolves, but have recently read a book called Red Moon by Benjamin Percy, which wasn't half bad. You might also like the author Kelly Armstrong, since a lot of her books are about werewolves (though I warn you, parts of them can be quite explicit!) Edited July 2, 2014 by Signor Finzione Quote
Fionen Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 I don't like most Romance novels but I have read a couple of the Urban Fantasy series Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs and will probably read more of them in the future because they include so many cool creatures. So far they have had werewolves, vampires, faeries (which is actually the larger category of "The Fae" so like Nymphs, Selkies, and Gremlins), demons, witches, and shape shifters. Each book tends to focus on some crime that has happened in Mercy's town and of course she gets involved and plays detective to sort out what is really going on. Part of her reasoning is to keep the peace between the magical beings and humans. You might also like The Host by Stephenie Meyer which is a Sci-fi with some romantic relationships thrown in. It is very different from Twilight. I forgot they made a movie based on it... so if you saw the movie and didn't like it, just know that the book is better. My last suggestion is another Urban Fantasy, The Autumn Castle by Kim Wilkins. Quote
Anna Begins Posted July 19, 2014 Posted July 19, 2014 I would suggest Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson or Starship Troopers by Robert A Heinlein. They are urban fantasy and science fiction as opposed to High Fantasy (look them up first to see if you'd like them). These were two of my favorites of the year so far. They are both dystopian novels. Maybe Timstar might chime in or you can have a look at his thread. Athena has good suggestions too- lots to read Happy reading Quote
