I registered but couldn't be bothered listing all my books all over again. I think I'll just stick to LT.

I had a little play after I posted:

There is a simple way to import your LT books.. although it has trouble finding some of them. I prefer the interface.. it has a nicer way of displaying your books; but the search seems limited to their database or amazon.com.. books only published in the UK aren't easy to pick up,or if they do, they don't have a cover image. The other thing with covers is that you can only diplay the 'default' one.. they do list others, but I can't see a way of displaying them.

However.. it is free! :thud:

I tired importing my books from LT, but it wouldn't work for me. :thud:

I imported my LibraryThing books into Shelfari a while ago. It didn't import a lot of them and a lot came across with no covers or wrong covers.

I haven't done much with it since. I like some aspects of it; you can add notes to each book (different than adding tags) and dates that you bought/read/loaned it etc.

I'm happy to stick with LibraryThing for the moment. It works much better for me.

HandD, try this:

1. In LibraryThing, go to Tools. In the middle column, under Exports, click 'Export all records as tab-delimited text'. This should create an excel file containing info regarding all of your books.

2. In Shelfari, go to Build Shelf, and under 'Import Library File' click 'Choose File' and select the excel file that was created by LibraryThing. This should go through and search the ISBNs and add the books to your shelf.

I hope this helps! :thud:

That's exactly what I tried before and it didn't work. However, it seems to be working this time round - hurrah!

Later: 102 of my 164 books imported. Ah well, it's better than nowt, I suppose - LOL!

Crikey - I did it but didn't do all books - thanks Kylie :D

You're welcome :D

I just tried importing mine again because I've recently catalogued a lot more of my books. 89 got imported and 146 didn't. It missed out some really well-known, obvious books and yet managed to add some really obscure books! Weird.

I joined Shelfari a few months ago, at first being very enthusiastic. My enthusiasm wore off though as, like everyone else here, I only managed to upload a third of my Librarything library, which is very annoying. Also, after a while it seemed that there was not as much activity in the groups as I had first thought.

However, I recently got active again and have met alot of writers, which is important for me, so I will keep it going for a while I think. My Shelfari address is here if anyone would like to become a friend. We could start a BCF group!

I just joined Shelfari today, and I was able to upload almost all of my books from LibraryThing (only 11 weren't found). I'm trying to still figure it out, but once I have it all updated, I'll add a link to my signature. My user name on there is Echo88. :D

Pp, I was waiting to find out if anyone else here was a member before starting a group. :D

The import and search needs some work.. I think it may be that LT can find all sorts of ISBNs, whilst Shelfari can't. For example, plenty of us here will have UK versions of books, and shelfari only seem to search in the US.

However, I did email and suggest that they include an amazon.co.uk search, as LT do, and they actually bothered to respond, which I though was good, and they said it was something alot of people had been suggesting.

I shall probably attempt both for a while, and see how it goes.

Edit: Ok, here we go.. http://www.shelfari.com/groups/11468/about is our group

I've been having a bit of a play around on Shelfari, but I really don't find it user-friendly at all. I think I'll just be sticking to LT - it's much easier to sue and I like the layout for the group messages better there too - I hate that staggered reply system that Shelfari have going on.

Not only I am on Shelfari but I have also joined the group

Seems a bit unused lately (ever?) but oh well.

PS I can of course understand why you all prefer LibraryThing to Shelfari, because LT was first and you are used to the way it works; as for me, my first site of the kind was Shelfari and I am more fond of using it than not (it offers blog widgets too, yay), especially when it comes to managing my TBR pile
