Alexi Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Hi Frankie Coincidentally, I took Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac out of the library today because it caught my eye on the quick selection shelf! Glad to see Zevin has positive reviews from you and Athena - will get to it myself in the next few weeks Quote
frankie Posted June 24, 2014 Author Posted June 24, 2014 Hi Frankie Coincidentally, I took Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac out of the library today because it caught my eye on the quick selection shelf! Oh bloody hell, I'm dead jealous! I hope you get to reading the book soon, and that you'll like it. Looking forward to your review! Quote
frankie Posted June 24, 2014 Author Posted June 24, 2014 I visited my parents about a month ago. The weather was lovely, we had our first BBQ of the summer (it's a rather new, great thing for us, now that my parents have their own house with a big yard, and Dad got this beautiful big ass BBQ for his 60th Bday a few summer's ago). One thing about my family: we all read. Mom reads thrillers and chick lit books for the most part, Dad is more into war books and books about his neighborhood and the nature. Brother also reads, but I don't see him often and don't know his taste. I remember him reading Gelsey Kirkland's Dancing on My Grave, when I was just a little kid in elementary school... When he was visiting but out of the house, meeting his friends, I would steal the book and read bits and pieces... I never got to finish it, but a few years ago I found a cheap copy of the book and it's on my TBR. It's odd, really, how I'm obsessed about re-reading and actually finishing the novel. Anyhow... Whenever I visit my parents, Dad and I go to the library to look at the removed books -shelves at the backroom. I usually take home about 5 or so books, Dad settles for one. He seems very meticulous about the books he wants.... I've never really seen him read books, but I know he's read pretty much all of the Kalle Päätalo -books (a great Finnish author) he's got his hands on. And by now he's collected a lot of books for himself. I used to ask him, when is he ever going to read any of the books he keeps buying, because I never see him actually reading books. And so far his answer has been 'when I have retired'. And it was always so, so many years ahead.... Until this summer. My Dad has finally retired! He retired on 13 (Friday ) June. And now he can read and read and read.... Dad's always been keen on me reading a Kalle Päätalo book. Because he is his favorite author, and he relates to the people in the books (he grew up with a similar background). When I last visited my parents, I promised I would read a KP book if he read a book of my choosing: Eevan luokka by Mary Marck. For all the non-Finns, that books is a L. M. Montgomery / Louisa May Alcott kind of book about Finnish youngsters in school in the 1950s or so. We actually put it in writing and signed it Oh dear, this is probably going to take another post from me.... I've not even gotten to the point I was going to make!! Quote
frankie Posted June 24, 2014 Author Posted June 24, 2014 Anyhow.... Going back to the last time I went to visit my parents. Dad had bought a new book called Aivot pellolle by Mikael Niemi. He'd previously read Populäärimusiikkia Vittulajänkältä by the same author (he got it as a present) but didn't like it. But about AP, he said, it was a weirdo bloody book. He didn't say if it was good or bad, but he kept going on about it for a while, so I thought he must've liked it at least a bit. Sometimes you just can't tell with Dad. That's just his sense of humour (which I love). Anyhow... He made such a big deal out of the book that I said I was going to borrow it and read it. I've read Populäärimusiikkia Vittulajänkältä so I thought why not read this one from the same author. When Dad gave me the book, I leafed through it. And then I saw.... something odd, between the first few pages. I showed it to Dad and asked what it was. 'Dad?? Is this fukking navel fluff???' 'No it is not.' 'Dad?? What the fukk is it???' 'Well the book was so oddly weird and things that it deserved a bookmark of its kind. It's fluff from my sock'. 'Dad!!!!!!!' And I've got pictures to prove it! Quote
Athena Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 ! It's very nice for your dad he's retired now, I hope he'll have lots of fun during his retirement . The BBQ sounds nice and it's great when everyone in the family reads a lot. I'm the biggest reader in my family but we do all love or really like to read. My brother doesn't read that much because he prefers to do other things and my parents mainly read when they're on holidays or in the weekend when it's nice weather outside. My sister reads when she travels or at home (so quite a bit). I can't imagine what it's like when no one else in your family reads, that must be difficult. Quote
Anna Begins Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 'Well the book was so oddly weird and things that it deserved a bookmark of its kind. It's fluff from my sock'. 'Dad!!!!!!!' That is too funny! Quote
frankie Posted July 11, 2014 Author Posted July 11, 2014 (edited) Yes, my Dad is a very funny character, I think I got my sense of humour from him, most definitely! He'll get me laughing in no time when I'm visiting my parents. This next bit is very much off topic, but I always post about this and as it's my thread I hope you don't mind Tomorrow starts the annual Ilosaarirock festival here in Joensuu. I've attended since 1997 or so, I can't remember the exact year. This year the line-up is simply superb, it's the best I've ever witnessed and I'm so stoked about the festical! Here are the bands. The links are to Finnish introductions on the bands on the festival website, so no use for you, but I'm too lazy to write the bands down myself and I can't be bothered to remove the links Lauantai 12.7. Mustasch (SWE) Riverside (POL) Studio Killers (UK) Trentemøller (DEN) Aksim & Musta Barbaari Asa & Band Black Lizard Boom Shakalaka Damn Seagulls Gracias & The Globe Band Haloo Helsinki! First bands were Alice in Chains, which I've listened to since I was in high school. I've only really listened to two of their albums, so I really don't know anything about their current music, but I am so excited and I kind of feel like I'm also really honored to be able to see them play. They are perhaps my least favorite grunge group I listened to (Nirvana was my favorite, Pearl Jam was second best and then Soundgarden), but it's not like I have a chance of seeing Nirvana... Duh! And Pearl Jam has so far ignored Finland's invitations! I'll have to fly to Sweden to see them some day.... Moving on. The equally amazing news was that Portishead was joining! This is another band I've listened to since my high school years. I particularly loved their album Portishead, I would listen to it when the autumn darkness was closing in. Such atmospheric, beautiful music This is actually their first Finnish gig, so again, I can't believe my luck! The third band I was really excited about seeing is Riverside. A great Polish prog rock band. Thank you Steve for making me listen to their Out of Myself -album! I almost went to see them play in Helsinki last autumn but something else came up. Sanni is a Finnish singer-songwriter who released her first album last year and I just fell in love with all of her singles and then I started listening to her album on Spotify. She's only 20 but has been writing songs for other artists for years, and now she's made it on her own. Such a cool chick! I saw her play at Kerubi last autumn but I was busy talking to a bunch of people so half of the concert passed me by without me noticing. I'll pay 100% attention tomorrow The band that I'm quite oddly the most jazzed about at the moment is Mustasch, a Swedish band. And I've only discovered the band this spring!! First I heard their song Thank You For the Demon on radio and loved it, and then when I heard they're coming to the festival, I decided to listen to their other songs and I fell in love with the first track from the Thank You For the Demon -album, right when I started listening to it. And the rest of the album is amazing, too! And I've listened to their other albums. I haven't read anything about them or heard anything about them but I think they are going to put on a great show. Good music! Oh and this will actually be their only gig in Finland this summer, so how lucky am I and the rest of the Ilosaarirock folks?! I loved Turmion Kätilöt, this Finnish industrial metal band, when they released their first album, but I grew tired of the music style at some point and stopped following them. But when I heard they're coming to the festival, I went back to their old album and listened to one of their newer albums, too, and it's like we were never apart Very much looking forward to seeing the gig. They are like the Finnish Rammstein, although not as good, obviously, but good enough. Oh man, I have to go and do the dishes and sort out stuff for tomorrow. And I've not even talked about the rest of the bands! Well I guess I've mentioned all the big ones, the internationally famous ones that I love and which you might know. It was such a tragedy But good on the rest to keep on trucking Jar of Flies is actually the only original AIC CD I own! It's a great one, it takes me back to those great summer in high school, of which I have such fond memories. You have good taste! Hehe, I remember a time when I was recording mixed tapes, I recorded songs from radio and used to listen to the tapes. Sour Times was on a few of those tapes! And that's one of the two songs that made me by the first Portishead album. Have you heard their song Numb? That's the first song I remember hearing by them, and that was and has been their biggest hit in Finland. At least as far as I know. I know I'm going to be a bit nervous and not too comfortable when walking to the festival area. It's so many people, and I always feel like they are staring at me. But I know that after walking a few hundred meters from the corner, the nerves go away and it's just like old times. I'm not usually comfortable with big crowds, but I'm so used to Ilosaarirock by now Quote

I remember this one popular guy (in our circle, at least) made me one with The Cure and all these alternative bands I had never heard of and I was in rapture I always had mixed feelings about Alice continuing without Layne. But I guess Jerry Cantrell was just as much as part of that band as Layne was. Love Numb! It didn't break here, but should have! I think the US was too caught up in grunge at that time. Quote

And I still have my other tapes. I think I have Alice in Chains's Unplugged album on a cassette (I know I have it at least on CD). Oh to be given a mixed tape (and one with good music, as well!) from a popular guy... Nobody ever made me one. I almost made one for the guy I had this huge crush on, when junior high ended and we were going to go to separate school and wouldn't be in the same classes again. But I never did. You wouldn't still happen to have that particular mixed tape, would you? I always had mixed feelings about Alice continuing without Layne. But I guess Jerry Cantrell was just as much as part of that band as Layne was. I know that back in the day when Staley died, I couldn't understand why the others decided to go on. It didn't feel right to me. But like you said, Cantrell is as big a part of the band as Staley was and in retrospect I respect him and the rest of the band for keeping on going. It can't have been easy. Love Numb! It didn't break here, but should have! I think the US was too caught up in grunge at that time. So cool you know Numb, too! It's a shame it wasn't such a big hit over there, I think it's loads better than Sour Times But who could blame you guys, grunge was big and I love grunge Quote
poppyshake Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Very rude of Pearl Jam to ignore Finland's invitations .. if I were you I'd ignore theirs when they send them out It's going to be awesome isn't it and you'll have a great time. Hope the sun shines on you Very jealous about Portishead .. I love them but have never managed to see them. Is that a relative of yours playing on Saturday? You want to get up there with them .. bang a tambourine or something Have fun my lovely .. soak it all up xx Quote

frankie Posted July 12, 2014 Author Posted July 12, 2014 (edited) Very rude of Pearl Jam to ignore Finland's invitations .. if I were you I'd ignore theirs when they send them out It's very rude, innit?! But I would never be able to ignore them if they sent me an invite... I don't know why they don't come to Finland. I know this used to be the back bush of music when it came to big bands visiting us, but during the 2000s it changed. Madonna came over and then lots of bands who've previously ignored us started coming over and I think now there's an international consensus that Finland is pretty a-ok and visitable. I don't know what Pearl Jam's problem is?! It's going to be awesome isn't it and you'll have a great time. Hope the sun shines on you Very jealous about Portishead .. I love them but have never managed to see them. But you live loads closer to Portishead! How have you managed not being able to go? I don't know if they do many gigs... This is their first to Finland, like I said, so it's all the more special. Usually band's first gigs are in Helsinki. Joensuu is pulling the carpet from under Helsinki's feet, heheheh! Is that a relative of yours playing on Saturday? You want to get up there with them .. bang a tambourine or something You are so quick eyed and clever! Sometimes when I meet new people, I tell them I'm related to him. They never believe me. They say, 'no you are not' and I shrug my shoulders and say 'yeah, you're right'. And then change the subject. I might have to come up with new material for when meeting new people... Have fun my lovely .. soak it all up xx I wish you lots of fun with the festival, Frankie . Thank you both! It's going to be great! And it's a sunny day, too, but not a steaming hot one, so very very perfect Edited July 12, 2014 by frankie Quote

frankie Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 Did you make it? How was it? How was Alice In Chains? Details, please I made it, yes, and it was great! I think I missed a few songs from AIC in the beginning, and I didn't go very close to the stage, but what I listened to I really liked. They played The Rooster and a few other familiar songs, but I have to check their names, I can't remember them And they were already leaving, and I thought bloody hell this is it... But they came back for one more song, and you know what that song is, don't you. You do! Down in a Hole! Of course! I had goosebumps Oh it was sweet. I can't believe I've seen them play live! They've both got a great ear for melody, imo. Mariusz isn't quite as up himself as Mr Wilson is, I don't think. But then Mr Wilson is a genius, so he's allowed to be. Just. ETA: You might like this I think Mauriusz is a genius, too. Maybe not as well known a genius, but still. He was dead keen on having everything right. The thing is, I'm not that organized as to notice if bands make mistakes when playing live. I don't know what happened, if it was because I was in the front row (!!!) or what, but he made one mistake with his guitar and I could see in his face that he wasn't happy But the gig was awesome, awesome, awesome. Awesome!! When it ended, they didn't come back for an encore, but I think that might be because they played for as long as they were supposed to and did not quit earlier, like some bands might... ? And they just weren't allowed more time. So when they left, it was so weird... I'd been so into the gig that when it was all over and everyone walked away to see other bands, I just stood there, aghast, and thought, what now? What am I supposed to do now? It can't have ended so quickly... It really felt like they'd only just started. Time flew by. I got this kind of 'musical hangover': I've had a blast, time flew by, I wanted more, but all fun ended, and all that was left was the sad aftermath of not being able to experience the same fun and orgasmic music for a long long time again. Anna Begins Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 Ok, for some reason, I can't Quote, but anyway- I LOVE Down in a Hole- no wonder you got goosebumps! How is the singer? I'm so glad you had a good time, you'd been looking forward to it for so long (probably since last year, right? lol) Glad to see you back- I've seen you lurking a tad this morning (at least it was morning here, now it's noon). frankie Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 Continuing with the Ilosaarirock festival 'report'... I saw all the bands I really wanted to see. And a few others. First band I saw was Magic Meredith, which is a Finnish alternative band, and the band's been inspired by some of the Seattle grunge bands. I'd never heard of them before, but when I read the info on them in the Ilosaarirock leaflet, I thought I want to check them out. It was a great way to start the festival. I really liked them They didn't have much of an audience, but they seemed to have a lot of fun playing. They were young lads, and I bet they were excited to be playing at one of the biggest festivals in Finland. I've been listening to their stuff on Spotify afterwards and I'm liking them still! I think I saw some other stuff in between, but nothing worth mentioning... Next up was Mustasch from Sweden! I had been looking forward to that gig for such a short time but with such eagerness I can't tell you. And it was a brilliant gig! The front man, Ralf, was a very polite and fun character. He helped a few photographers on the stage to take better pics, and he was funny in between songs, he'd learned a few Finnish things. He liked to yell 'butcher the elk!' in Finnish, for some odd reason It may have been because they played a song called I Hunt Alone... He'd also learned to say 'Such the elk's [unmentionable]' in Finnish Such a great rock gig, I was really feeling it! Fantastic stuff. And after the gig Ralf jumped off the stage to drink a few beers with the audience and he shook some hands and said hello in Finnish to a little kid and made fun of a guard and all that jazz. I'm definitely going to keep listening to their good stuff and will look forward to seeing them play in Finland some later time. I want to see more of them! Then I went to see Riverside. Fantastic. Front row! The guys were great, and one of the sound check guys was funny, he was having his own private dancing show at the back, I'm not sure if he meant for the audience to see him but I did and I was laughing my ass off. And Turmion Kätilöt, the Finnish industrial metal band was really great, too! I was pleasantly surprised They are coming to Joensuu later on this year, in the autumn and if I have the funds, I'll definitely go and see their gig. Sunday... I went in very late But I wasn't bothered, I saw the bands I wanted to see. Namely Portishead, and Alice in Chains. Portishead was a-ma-zing! Such an atmospheric gig. They took me to places! I have this friend who is very musical, he plays the keyboards in a few bands and he also does soundcheck stuff and roadie stuff and he's seen all kinds of bands during his lifetime, and he actually posted in his FB feed that the Portishead gig went straight to his number 1 gigs ever. That's saying a lot! And deservingly so. Oh boy. And Alice in Chains.... Best Ilosaarirock ever. Quote

I just knew you'd love Down in a Hole. It's a legendary song! Who wouldn't be moved by it! The singer was really good! He sounded a lot like Layne Staley, which I think is good, personally, imo, imho, etc I know it might be really weird for some people for the band to look for someone who sounds so much like him, it some people might think it's kind of disrespectful towards Staley, but personally I thought he was good. I really should look into their new albums. I think for some years now I've not looked forward to Ilosaarirock that much.... I mean it's a tradition, and I always love it. But the last few years I've not had anyone to go with, I've only had people here and there to meet up but I've been 'traveling solo' most of the time. And the last few years, the line-up has always been poorer and poorer. Always bands that I'm not that interested in. But this year, when I heard about the bands, I was through the roof. And it was just as great as I'd thought! I think there's no beating this year, I've now experienced the best ever and I should really lower my expectations for next year... Slowly but surely! I've been lurking sometimes, here and there, but I've been visiting my parents and for once I actually did things with them and socialized and tried to keep off the internet I had a good time, though, so that's good. I'm back home now, though, and I'm hoping to catch up on the general forum business this week Quote
frankie Posted July 23, 2014 Author Posted July 23, 2014 This next bit is about a book, I promise! I was visiting my parents this week, and had a lovely time. Didn't have time to go to the library, though, and I'm gutted! But we did go to a thrift shop and I got a copy of Jonas Jonasson's book about the 100 year old geezer. When we were driving back from the shop, I was browsing through the three books my parents bought from the same place. Mum had bought a book of stories by this Finnish author whose chick lit books and girls' books I've read as a teenager/YA, and I was happy with that! I'm going to borrow it at some point She also bought a Mary Higgins Clark book which sounded good. Dad had bought a diary of some doctor, and I didn't think it was very interesting... but then my parents decided they needed some things from the grocery store and I stayed in the car because I was too lazy to go with them. I took a closer look at the doctor's diary... It said in the back cover that the doctor is from Nurmes, my hometown! And that the book was his diary from the days when he was doctoring at the local hospital! I got rather keen on the whole book. I started reading it and realized it was from the time when the old hospital was still up, the one where my Mom's Mom actually worked as a nurse. Exciting! Soon after that they built a new health service center and the hospital was closed down and destroyed and gotten rid of. I think I was born a few years after the new health center was opened, so the 'old hospital' is just folk tale to me. Anyhow. I was reading the book and when my parents got back to the car I asked them if they know the doctor. They said that they didn't know him personally, but knew of him, and that he'd actually lived on the same street I grew up in! He lived only three houses down the road! I was reading the book further yesterday, when I came to a certain passage. And this is something I posted on FB about, in Finnish, and Athena picked up on it So here it is in English, the whole story. Well, I'm not going to do a word for word translation, but the passage said that the doctor's dogs were making a helluva ruckus on the yard. It all started when Karjalainen's Tessu from up the street escaped home and got into the doctor's yard and she was playing with Julle the dog. Then Nalle the other dog got out, too, at which point Tessu ran away and got to the doctor's neighbor's yard, and then she was having a barking match with Julle and Nalle, and they were really getting at it, and jumping up and down and making the snow fly all around And that only a dog's friend would put up with that kind of noise. And doctor wondered if someone would write to the local paper about it, to complain. Well, if you know me, you know that my last name is Karjalainen. So I immediately ran to Mom and asked if it was our dog! Although I didn't remember a dog called Tessu.... She said it was my Grandpa's dog!!!! Bloody hell you guys, my Grandpa's dog has made it to a book! What a celebrity Grandpa is my Dad's Dad (or was, he is no longer with us) and coincidentally my Dad's three siblings were visiting us this week and when they all came back from their fishing trip I couldn't wait to show them all the passage of the book! I think they were all a bit proud and amazed, although they weren't quite as outspoken about it as I was, I was jumping up and down, being a booky and doggy person When I talked to them about it, my Mom started leafing through our family albums to see if she could find a picture of the dog. The thing is, when I was a teenager, I tore some of the pictures from the family albums and kind of 'stole' them to my own private collection which I kept in Joensuu Last year I thought it was silly of me and I took the pictures back and ever since then they've stood there at home in a big pile, waiting to be reorganized and put in their rightful places. When Mom was leafing through the first album, she came across an empty spot and I said I probably have the picture that's been taken from there. I started leafing through the pile and the first picture I saw and knew that was not from my own personal kid picture album I gave to Mum. It was one where my Mom was with my brother who was only 2 years old in the pic, and there was also Dad's brother, who passed away when I was just a little girl. I was always sad when I thought about the passed away brother of Dad's because I have this notion I liked him when I was a kid, and so I'd wanted to have his picture here in Joensuu to look at. When I gave that picture to Mom, she said, bloody hell, the dog in the picture (there was a dog which I'd not paid any attention to before as it was a dog I've not known) is actually Tessu!!! What are the odds?? Quote
Anna Begins Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 I got a copy of Jonas Jonasson's book about the 100 year old geezer. To me, it is a bit creepy that they would choose someone that sounded like him, but maybe they just want to stay true to their sound. I dunno, it used to bother me, but now that I've heard what you think of them now, I might check out some of their stuff too. I'd love to have some new Alice In Chains around me! Quote

No worries, I completely get where you are coming from. But I guess I don't personally find it a problem and maybe that's because AIC is (perhaps undeservingly) one of the least favorite grunge bands of mine. If it had been Nirvana, I would've written some very angry hate mail I think the best thing for you to do is try and see if you could listen to some of their new stuff on youtube, and see if you like it, and if you do, buy some albums That's what I plan to do myself. This reminds me: I was in high school when I heard that Soundgarden had disbanded. I was gutted! And I took my anger against this coat rack thing. No, I didn't smash it, but I took a pen and wrote "Soundgarden broke up. Booooo! ' I bet the writing's still there! Quote
