Athena Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 This reminds me, that one good way to keep the TBR books in plain view is to try and fill the back rows with books one has already read. Mine are shelved pretty much according to size at the moment, to take maximum advantage of the little space I have. x That is a good way . And that makes sense, not much to do about it. Hopefully in some time you'll have a bigger place with more space for books. Quote
frankie Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 It's not really about having a bigger place, I could fit more bookcases in my apartment, I just don't want to go buying new bookcases when I know I'm going to move sometime in the hopefully not too distant future. I'll wait till I'm all settled in a new apartment Quote

frankie Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 x I hope you'll get a new apartment not too long from now! What do your bookcases look like? Thanks! I have two bookcases, one that's light brown, it has doors (keeps away the dust, which is rather handy, as I'm allergic. Otherwise the doors are a complete nuisance). The other bookcase is the one that's malfunctioning and I'm going to get rid of it soon enough. It now mainly works as shelves where to stash my keys, wallet, a few pics and other misc stuff. I have a small two-shelf 'bookcase' that's actually a TV stand, me thinks. It fits four rows of books in total, so not useless. And of course I have my Rory drawer. Quote

frankie Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 (edited) I'm currently re-reading Twilight and I feel like a school girl again. It's sort of bittersweet: I love reading what happens, and I like it that I'm able to sort of live vicariously through ... some people, ahem, but at the same time I feel like, where's my Edward And I feel like going out, because I don't think any potential Edwards will come a'knocking on my door, but then if I go out, I have to have something to do in order to stay out and be happy, and that something would be my book. And I ain't going to a coffee house to read Twilight and ogle at guys Edit: Is it 'ogle guys' or 'ogle at' or 'ogle on'. Maybe just 'ogle' without a preposition? This reminds me of when someone on here taught me a new phrase: 'perving guys', which means looking at them appreciatively. I forgot the exact phrase and said I was perving on a guy. I didn't notice any difference but apparently it was something quite different Edited April 8, 2014 by frankie Quote
Chrissy Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Sounds like you wanna go on a vampire hunt! I would use 'ogle guys' or 'ogle at', but not 'ogle on', although at my age there ain't much ogling happening - all the hotties look so very young to me - I'll have to stick with ogling my cuddly husband! frankie Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 (edited) Sounds like you wanna go on a vampire hunt! Times are desperate when a vampire will do I would use 'ogle guys' or 'ogle at', but not 'ogle on', although at my age there ain't much ogling happening - all the hotties look so very young to me - I'll have to stick with ogling my cuddly husband! The 'on' makes it almost sound like one's doing something that the guy will be able to actually feel being done to him, when I think about it... It's true how some of the hotties are more often than not embarrassingly young What's odd is that if they are not younger than me, they are usually older than me. I don't seem to like guys who are my own age very attractive, these days I bet your hubby won't mind your ogling.. Just don't tell him that it was inspired by the BCF! bobblybear Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 I was reading Jänet's reading log earlier today and she had arranged her TBR according to the chronological order in which she'd acquired the books. I thought it was a fun idea, and also very useful if one's keen to read some of the books that have been on one's reading list the longest. This is something I've been wanting to do for a while now but I haven't been very successful... I've started doing this as well, except I have lumped the pre-2012 books in one category (on my thread). On my Kindle I have the collections sorted by Year Purchased and Year Read, and as I read them I move them from one collection to another. I've read a lot this year, that I purchased in 2011 and 2012, but a lot of the ones from 2010 just don't appeal. I'm sure I will get through them eventually. Quote

Good to hear there are more of us who have a thing for checking out the 'chronological success' of one's reading I'd actually started organizing my books (all of them, not just the ones on TBR) in a chronological order at least twice or three times before, but it was such an enormous task that I always gave up Now that I listed the TBR books only, it was a lot smoother. I'm sure you will get to those earlier books eventually You can't force it, you'll just some day find that you're suddently wanting one of those titles and there you go Quote
Alexi Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I must admit I haven't logged when I bought my books, but I intend to start now I'm keeping a record of books acquired in 2014. (I'm trying to read pre-2014 books before I get to them too!) But there are a few i know have been cluttering up my shelf for a long time. I know the oldest is 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' by Victor Hugo. I got it for Christmas about 5 years ago but it intimidates me for some reason! Quote

I have that on my TBR, too, and yep, it's intimidating! Although it's not even that big, compared to Hugo's other novel, Les Miserables... Now that book scared the crap out of me! Quote
frankie Posted April 15, 2014 Author Posted April 15, 2014 (edited) My mojo is really funny... The last eight books I've read have been re-reads, because I haven't been able to process any new books. However, two of these (the latest re-reads) have been Twilight and New Moon, and I've been able to start Eclipse, the third book in the series, which I've never read before. I was sure I would have trouble reading it, but no, I got sucked right in! (No pun intended. Oh that is such a bad pun, I never would've said it knowingly! ) I am 240 pages in, and I'm very much enjoying the book. Pure escapism. Although I have to say, Bella is really annoying sometimes. And so's Jacob. Edward only on an occasion or two. I have no idea where the book is going, but I unfortunately do remember one spoiler that I found out about a few years ago. Sometimes I forget spoilers, but this one I never forgot and it annoys me that I remember it. The spoiler, in case you're wondering: Bella is going to be made into a vampire. But at least I don't know who does it eventually. If I can finish Eclipse, I'll move on to Breaking Dawn. After that, who knows. I might have to go back to re-reads, but if that happens, it's okay. I have books I don't mind re-reading. I have been thinking about re-reading the Sookie Stackhouse series... And I'd love to re-read some Stephen King novels. Mainly Christine, and maybe Rose Madder. And Needful Things. Oooh, and Rage (by Richard Bachman). That reminds me, I still have Salem's Lot and Dark Half on my TBR... I've been meaning to get to those for ages. Books Although I've been thinking about going to the library and borrowing Chocolat by Joanne Harris and the Jane Austen book by Karen Joy Fowler. What was it called? Reading Group something. The Jane Austen Book Club. Maybe. Edit: And maybe I really should look into the Edgar Allan Poe works, inspired by Eleonora. And that wonderful book by Roland Barthes. And maybe try to get into Catch-22 again. So many books!! Edited April 15, 2014 by frankie Quote
Athena Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Yay for your mojo! I'm so glad reading Eclipse is going well. It's not nice that you know this spoiler, I find it's never nice to get spoiled for what happens in a book or book series that you want to read. I hope you enjoy reading both Eclipse and Breaking Dawn . I think the book is called The Jane Austen Book Club, it's on my wishlist. I hope you have some more wonderful (re)reads . Quote
frankie Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 Thanks Athena! Spoilers are really the worst But then again, it's sometimes impossibly to avoid them... I think I did actually very well for going years without being spoiled with this book series. As for my mojo.... I just got some very stress relieving news from one of my uni teachers, I don't have to re-take a course I thought I might have to. It'll save me time and anxiety and stress, and I'm over the moon about it!! And this means that I have less to stress about, and future doesn't seem very bleak anymore, and I think mojo will like that I'm so psyched! (It's an oral expression class, and I hate having to do speeches and presentations etc., so I'm really, really relieved I don't have to re-sit the class!) Quote
Athena Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 That's amazing news ! I don't like presentations at all either so I fully imagine you're over the moon about it . I hope you will feel less stressed now (I always get really stressed out from having to give a presentation). I hope your mojo will enjoy the less-stress environment . How far are you with your study? Quote
Timstar Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 That's great news! I hope you can get stuck into some reading now! Quote

How far are you with your study? Presentations are the worst I know. Being an English major and Swedish minor, I've had to do oral expression classes both in English and in Swedish, and the obligatory one in Finnish, too I really, really disliked those classes. It's just not my element. The Swedish classes weren't that terrible, though... The teachers were really nice, and the Swedish students were also nicer than the English majors. And the teachers didn't expect us to be so good at Swedish, because it was only the second foreign language to most. We started studying Swedish four years later than English, so we were bound to be less fluent in it. That's great news! I hope you can get stuck into some reading now! Thanks! This should definitely make mojo happy Quote
frankie Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) I've started to entertain the idea of writing a thesis after all. I had been thinking for a while that I wasn't going to do it (long story) but now I feel like I might be interested in writing it after all. That is, if I can change the subject and think of something completely different. I was never keen on my current subject. I would need something really inspiring, though. It's also a choice of whether to choose a book I like, or really dislike. What if I started hating the book I liked, when I was doing my research? I wouldn't want to take those chances... I was reading my earlier notes and handouts from my seminar class, and it said somewhere that it might be good to go for a book you dislike: the hate might get the adrenaline going. I thought it was actually pretty good advice! You know how sometimes it's fun to write a rant review on a book you loathed... (I immediately thought of The Optimist's Daughter by Eudora Welty.) I'm not going to decide for sure that I'm going to do it, I'm not going to start stressing about this. But I'm entertaining the idea. I'm thinking of ideas and letting things come to me. I've thought about Jewish literature (I did a course on the subject years ago, and liked it very much), war literature... Female body? The Tenant by Bernard Malamud? Going After Cacciato by Tim O'Brien? I need a book, a genre I'm okay with, and an angle. Edit: Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami? Edit: Queer literature? Edited April 16, 2014 by frankie Quote
Athena Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 I hope you find a good topic to write about . I know the theses I wrote were based on my scientific research rather than on books and an angle but I enjoyed writing them. I hope you do too. How many hours are you supposed to work on it (or how many ECTS points do you get)? How long does it need to be? You should pick a topic/book that you think you can write a lot about. Queer literature might be interesting as you seem to know a lot about it (does it mean written by a homosexual or about homosexuality? I read a book once where one of the characters turns out to be a lesbian but it doesn't happen until the end so it's kind of a spoiler), of the other choices I have only heard of Murakami but haven't got that particular book. Good luck ! Quote
frankie Posted April 17, 2014 Author Posted April 17, 2014 I hope you don't take offence, Athena, but those are the sort of questions I'm trying not to think about at the moment because I don't want to stress the idea of writing my thesis after all, when I've been telling myself for a long time that I won't do it and that I'm free of it I simply want to think of ideas at this point. I might not write the thesis anyways, so I'm not going to think about the tecnical stuff. Quote
