pontalba Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) Is Google our friend? I know I always say that, but I'm beginning to wonder. We're crossing into new territory, and I'm a bit.......well, both awed and scared. Nervous about it? A bit. Is this fantastically wonderful, or absolutely crazy? http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/innovations/wp/2013/12/19/google-is-hoarding-robots-heres-what-they-may-be-planning/?wprss=rss_technology&wpisrc=nl_tech'>Google is hoarding robots. Here’s what they may be planning http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/innovations/wp/2013/12/19/google-is-hoarding-robots-heres-what-they-may-be-planning/?wprss=rss_technology&wpisrc=nl_tech Wow, Just wow. Athena Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 (edited) Personally I think robots will be very important in our future so I think it's good Google's investing in them. I just hope they do good things with it. EDIT: My dad works a lot with / on robots and was recently in the news on TV to comment on Google's investment. He works on for example an eye surgery robot, a home and care robot (AMIGO), and others. Edited December 20, 2013 by Athena Quote
muggle not Posted December 20, 2013 Posted December 20, 2013 (edited) Robots can/are important in surgery. It remains to be seen though on how Google intends on using robots. There doesn't seem to be any question though that robots are in their future plans since they have bought 8 different companies that are involved in robotics. Amazon's plans for using the robotic helicopter is understandable as there would be a big cost savings for the company. Big changes are a' coming and only time will tell. I agree with Athena that robots will be important in the future, however, as with everything I hope there are controls so that things don't get out of hand like we see in some of the movies. I would hate to see the robots controlling us and the world. Edited December 20, 2013 by muggle not Quote
pontalba Posted December 22, 2013 Author Posted December 22, 2013 I've read about using robots in surgery. I can imagine that if programmed correctly, they can be far more accurate and quick than it is possible for a human to be. I guess I've just grown up on all the old books that featured wars between humans and the ultimate robots. After all, humans still have to program them, and how reliable are we? But, it's progress, and is not going to just go away. I hope it is good. Quote
