shelley.s Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I read Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut this year too but i wasn't all that blown away by it. I expected alot more considering the amount of friends that told me i had to read it! What was your thoughts on The Skull by PKD? I haven't read this one and loved alot of his other books. Also was Bridge to Terabithia any good? I saw the film and thought it was a complete let down, i wondered if the book was any better? Quote
Harrison Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 I was recommended Slaughter house 5 by a friend as well and was expecting a mans experiences on the field in WWII. So I was a bit disappointed on that point, I found the book rather depressing and was not really thrilled with it. At times it inspired some thought, "When a person dies he only appears to die, he is very much alive in the past" is an example, it had a few laughs in it, and plenty of Fate vs Free Will. Mostly I found it depressing though.. So it goes. The Skull by PKD was a short story and I found it pretty interesting, its the first I have read of PKD, although I own several of his books. The ending was blatantly predictable, but was thought provoking. I enjoyed it and intend to read more of PKDs' stories. If you read it let me know what you think about it, I can't really say much without giving anything away due to how short the story is. I have read Bridge to Terabithia twice now, once in middle school and then this year. In middle school I loved the book, but having read it again I found my opinion of it has changed a bit, this time around I didn't find the book to be nearly as emotional or engaging as I did in middle school. But it's a good book, it's a coming of age story, Jess is a simple boy who lives a plain unimaginative life, and Leslie brings imagination, adventure and friendship into Jess's life. Quote
Athena Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Great list ! I've read The Summoner by Gail Z. Martin but not yet the other books in the series. I should probably reread the first book before I read the others. What did you think of it? The Phantom of the Opera is on my shelf but I haven't read it yet. Do you like it so far? Some of Brent Weeks' books are on my shelf too (unread). I've read one Philip K. Dick book and have a couple of others on my wishlist. I have some of Kurt Vonnegut's books on my Kindle but I haven't read them yet (I prefer to read paper books most of the time). Quote
shelley.s Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Ah ok well i'll certainly add The Skull on to my TBR list! You have to stick with Philip K Dick, some of his books are a bit difficult to keep up with because they are just mind bogglingly weird but hes a fantastic author and some books are easier than others. A Scanner Darkly is my favorite but i recommended it to my friend and he found it a bit difficult. As for Bridge to Terabithia sadly i think alot of us find that a childhood book is not as good as we remember it when we read it as an adult. Some of the magic is lost. Good luck with the PKD books Quote
Timstar Posted November 28, 2013 Posted November 28, 2013 How did you find the Brent Weeks trilogy? I bought it second hand a couple of months ago but haven't got around to it yet. Quote
