Echo Posted July 5, 2007 Posted July 5, 2007 Sorry it's taken me so long to post this review. My apologies! Title: Everville Author: Clive Barker Date of Publication: 1994, Harpercollins Synopsis: On a mountain peak, high above the city of Everville, a door stands open: a door that lets onto the shores of the dream-sea Quiddity. And there's not a soul below who'll not be changed by that fact... Enthralling, chilling, and charged with an unbridled eroticism, Everville is above all a novel about the deepest yearnings of the human heart. For love. For hope. For understanding. And of course it's about the forces that threaten those dreams. The monsters that are never more terrible than when they wear human faces... Review: I actually read this book, which is a sequel, first before The Great and Secret Show, the first Book of the Art. Fortunately, this book stands well on its own and reads almost like its own story. There is a huge cast of characters, some good, some evil, some innocent of either. The book starts with the mysterious beginnings of the town of Everville, and its connection with Quiddity, over a hundred years ago. But the bulk of the book takes place within a few days during the present time, as the door to Quiddity is accidentally discovered. And while some get trapped within, there are other darker forces trying to get out, into our world. For all of its 697 pages, Everville is a quick read. The settings and situations are vivid, the characters are complex, and the story itself is engrossing. This book should appeal to any Clive Barker fan, or to anyone who appreciates the metaphysical side of nature, and who has ever wondered what lies "on the other side". A- Quote
