pontalba Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 It is a very good series, much better written and acted than Lewis. The good news is that there is a second series in the works. We've watched a few of Lewis, and while I really wanted to like it, it just wasn't.....Morse. /sigh/
Athena Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 It was good Steve, best not to take them too seriously but I loved the humour elements too. Christopher Ecclestone was great as Malachi (baddie), his voice was perfect for the part.
ian Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Watched No Country for Old Men last night. I was interested in watching this as I tried to read the book earlier this year and failed to get past the first quarter. I was told at the time that I should try the film: quite right too, it was absolutely fantastic, with mesmerising performances from all the main actors. I'll have to give the book another go....

Oh yeah, awesome film! Javier Bardem was so scary . . .
vodkafan Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 I watched Young Victoria last night , because it is Victorian and I don't mind Emily Blunt.....from a historical perspective I didn't believe a word of it it was just fiction with the odd mangled fact thrown in...some pretty dresses though. I had no idea that Prince Albert took a bullet (actually a ball) for Victoria by jumping in the way of an assassin I will have to check on that....
vodkafan Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 OK I just looked it up. The assassination attempt was complete fiction Albert was never shot. Our own Queen Elizabeth II was unhappy with this part of the film when shown a special preview.
Athena Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Yesterday evening we watched Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events. It was pretty good. I own the second book but haven't yet read it, so I don't know how it compares to the books.

I've tried to start the book twice. I haven't gotten very far. I can certainly imagine Javier Bardem in it! We recently saw him in The Counselor.....man, he is good!
vodkafan Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Just saw Gravity in 3D. It's not SF because it is set up in space right now. I liked it I want to watch it again.
chaliepud Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 I quite fancy that VF, would you say it's suitable for kids? (Youngest is 8 but mature and not easily scared!)

vodkafan Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 my brothers just been to see that, he says it was a brilliant film Yes it was especially in 3D. Before I saw it I had been a bit worried that Sandra Bullock would let it down as most of her films are kind of lightweight. But she did good.
vodkafan Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 I quite fancy that VF, would you say it's suitable for kids? (Youngest is 8 but mature and not easily scared!) I think it is OK for a kid who is especially into space and understands about the way things move in space, and zero gravity and stuff. Otherwise it may go over their head a tiny bit, but that is the worst that could happen. It is a human survival story and very exciting. The 8 year old would understand the story and the danger. Even in the very first scenes you get the feel of what it would be like up there enclosed in a space suit and fumbling with tools (or maybe that's my memories of being a commercial diver that got triggered) The views in 3D were just breathtaking, in the same way that The Matrix was like nothing we had seen before on screen. I think Sandra Bullock did a good job and was quite believable. As most of the shuttle mission specialists are experts in their fields first and astronauts second. George Clooney was a bit of a cliche for the purposes of the film, the old hand astronaut but it worked well. You know I am really hard to please when it comes to films but this one hit the spot!
chaliepud Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Thanks VF, will try and find the time to take them!
Athena Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Yesterday we saw Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, for the maybe 3rd or 4th time? It's really good, I quite enjoyed seeing it again.
