chaliepud Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 Happy Christmas to me!! Only 39 sleeps anyways! My only problem is that I only allow myself one to be read shelf and I'm now having to double shelve which I don't like.. I would really like to read some of the books that have been there the longest, I will have to try and figure out on Goodreads which those are.. Quote
bobblybear Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Jojo is sleeping better now in that she sleeps in till 630 every morning now so I need to get back in the habit of reading in bed, which means earlier nights, not sitting on the sofa catching up with my favourite TV shows after my eldest finally goes to bed! Nice haul of books. The Stand is one of my faves. I can't remember if you have read it before? I'm glad Jojo is sleeping through the night now; it was such a relief when Reuben began sleeping through. As cute as they are when they are puppies, it's so nice when they get older and settle into their routines (and calm down a bit as well! ). Quote
Marie H Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Here are my new additions - Stephen King - The Stand and Needful Things John Steinbeck - Cannery Row, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, The Pearl and The Red Pony (a very reasonably priced set from The book People) Pushing The Limits - Katie McGarry The Husband's Secret - Liane Moriarty Girl, Stolen - April Henry (for Decembers RNIB reading circle) A Dog Named Christmas - Greg Kincaid (Thank you frankie! ) Lost and Found - Jacqueline Sheehan (Thanks again frankie! ) Daring To Dream - Nora Roberts Marina - Carlos Ruiz Zafon Great haul!! poppyshake Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Happy Christmas to me!! Only 39 sleeps anyways! Is that right? Lord!! Shouldn't I be out shopping or something? Great book haul Hayley .. Happy Christmas to you indeed Quote
chaliepud Posted November 17, 2013 Author Posted November 17, 2013 Nice haul of books. The Stand is one of my faves. I can't remember if you have read it before? I'm glad Jojo is sleeping through the night now; it was such a relief when Reuben began sleeping through. As cute as they are when they are puppies, it's so nice when they get older and settle into their routines (and calm down a bit as well! ). No, I've not read it before but my Dad is a big Stephen King fan (I nearly wrote just King, but then thought you might think my Dad was a fan of the rather naff 80's band. I will try and get to it soon but still in a bit of a reading slump so probably not the best time at present. I am so happy that Jojo is sleeping through though it was a 6 O'clocker this morning as Obi went downstairs early (he sleeps by my bed) and I think he disturbed her. We are hopefully having a private agility lesson this week, with a trainer that has ben recommended to me. I've been told that she can give me a good start into the sport and give me lots of things to work on until Jojo is old enough to start properly, we're very excited! Great haul!! Thanks, I just need to stop now!! Is that right? Lord!! Shouldn't I be out shopping or something? Great book haul Hayley .. Happy Christmas to you indeed Only 37 now!!! I prefer to think of it as 5 weeks, sounds more manageable. We still don't know if Steve will be home for the big day yet so I may need to have it all ready earlier! You have no need to worry, you at least have your puddings done! I'll be making a chocolate pudding of sorts again I think and my Mum will bring a trifle. My daughters Christmas list was handed over yesterday, it resembled one that I think a 21 year old would write (she is 12 going on 13). Mac lipstick.. really??? But there is a candyfloss machine in there thankfully, to prove she is still a kid of sorts. Happy Christmas to you too Kay. Quote
Athena Posted November 17, 2013 Posted November 17, 2013 Oh dear, there appears to be a correlation between reading less and buying more! I was doing well I thought but I seem to have added to the TBR rather which at a rough count is now up to the mid 50's. Ohwell, I don't have any vices so who cares! Here are my new additions - Stephen King - The Stand and Needful Things John Steinbeck - Cannery Row, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, The Pearl and The Red Pony (a very reasonably priced set from The book People) Pushing The Limits - Katie McGarry The Husband's Secret - Liane Moriarty Girl, Stolen - April Henry (for Decembers RNIB reading circle) A Dog Named Christmas - Greg Kincaid (Thank you frankie! ) Lost and Found - Jacqueline Sheehan (Thanks again frankie! ) Daring To Dream - Nora Roberts Marina - Carlos Ruiz Zafon I think I will barely break even on my Goodreads challenge this years which is a little disappointing as I was 8 books ahead at one point, but I have in fact already this year read the same amount of pages that I read in the whole of 2012 so not so bad when I look at it that way. Jojo is sleeping better now in that she sleeps in till 630 every morning now so I need to get back in the habit of reading in bed, which means earlier nights, not sitting on the sofa catching up with my favourite TV shows after my eldest finally goes to bed! x Great haul ! I'm glad to hear Jojo is sleeping through the night a bit better, I hope you get some more time to read and do other things (and sleep!). Merry Christmas in advance to you too!! Quote
frankie Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 The wolves were brilliant frankie, when you finally get over here maybe we can go visit them. Oooh that would be great! I might be a bit scared though... You'd have to calm me down, use your soothing voice... Like a frankie whisperer... A detached house can be any size and number of floors but is a dwelling that is not attached to any other, a semi-detached is attached to just one other and a terraced would be a row of houses joined together. That sounded odd to me... I thought surely a detached house of all houses is attached to other houses... And then it hit me. Attached vs detached! Although I do know the word detached... I just read it at attached Thanks for clearing that up, I am now plenty wiser Obi is most definitely awesome, but he is very much a marmite dog, some people just don't understand him. He is wary of people but so many people don't accept this and wonder why he ends up grumbling at them.. He might not like me, but I would try and understand that and give him his space, even though I'm quite a big fan of his and would just love to cuddle up... But dogs are like people: you only know how they'll act and react when you meet them, and they are all individuals. IA Dog's Journey - W.Bruce Cameron The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul - Deborah Rodriguez I have a feeling these ought to be great! I am definitely enjoying Jojo, her training is coming along really well, although she wasn't so happy when I bathed her this morning.. I did try explaining that I was only bathing her as she rolled in fox wee but I don't think she agreed that she smelt unpleasant! I wonder what she would make of you if you rolled in fox wee and then let her sniff you! Would she like that... A very odd smell replacing Mommy Hayley smell! Oh dear, there appears to be a correlation between reading less and buying more! I was doing well I thought but I seem to have added to the TBR rather which at a rough count is now up to the mid 50's. Ohwell, I don't have any vices so who cares! You can't overdose on books Here are my new additions - Stephen King - The Stand and Needful Things John Steinbeck - Cannery Row, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, The Pearl and The Red Pony (a very reasonably priced set from The book People) Pushing The Limits - Katie McGarry The Husband's Secret - Liane Moriarty Girl, Stolen - April Henry (for Decembers RNIB reading circle) A Dog Named Christmas - Greg Kincaid (Thank you frankie! ) Lost and Found - Jacqueline Sheehan (Thanks again frankie! ) Daring To Dream - Nora Roberts Marina - Carlos Ruiz Zafon Nice haul! I love the Steinbeck set... And I'm awful sorry for contributing to your massively growing TBR pile... Quote
poppyshake Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Only 37 now!!! I prefer to think of it as 5 weeks, sounds more manageable. Yes .. 5 weeks sounds much less frightening .. and it's five weeks today ... but tomorrow it will be four weeks We still don't know if Steve will be home for the big day yet so I may need to have it all ready earlier! I hope he is able to be home Hayley You have no need to worry, you at least have your puddings done! I'll be making a chocolate pudding of sorts again I think and my Mum will bring a trifle. My mum was telling me that one of the things my niece Daisy had put on her list was a biker jacket .. and she's 8!!! Golly where do they get it from? We just asked for an etch-a-sketch I love that your daughter has stated exactly which lipstick she wants .. no leaving it to chance I love a Christmas trifle .. I'm very envious Quote
chaliepud Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 x Great haul ! I'm glad to hear Jojo is sleeping through the night a bit better, I hope you get some more time to read and do other things (and sleep!). Merry Christmas in advance to you too!! Thanks Athena, pesky puppy has decided she prefers 6am these past 2 days, it has been a little colder so maybe I'll try a cosier fleece in her bed tonight.. and maybe try to go to bed a little earlier. That's the bit i'm not so good at as I like to read in bed! Oooh that would be great! I might be a bit scared though... You'd have to calm me down, use your soothing voice... Like a frankie whisperer... That sounded odd to me... I thought surely a detached house of all houses is attached to other houses... And then it hit me. Attached vs detached! I love the Steinbeck set... And I'm awful sorry for contributing to your massively growing TBR pile... I have a soothing voice I use for the dogs, when I use it on the kids they often get nervous though as it's usually be trying to hold my temper in! Obi is just a bundle of nerves when he meets people, unfortunately he shows it by getting grumpy.. he is best ignored then sometimes he will come forth to greet, he can normally suss out a genuine person (especially if they are carrying treats ) I've not tried rolling in fox wee or anything worse, I'm sure she wouldn't be at all offended and would probably try to roll on me! I'm so glad I can't overdose on books, not that there is any danger of that, the speed I am reading at present hee hee! I think I will read Of Mice and Men first of the Steinbecks, I read it as a teen and I'm hoping it will be as good now as it was then.. Yes .. 5 weeks sounds much less frightening .. and it's five weeks today ... but tomorrow it will be four weeks I hope he is able to be home Hayley Kids .. what are they like?? My mum was telling me that one of the things my niece Daisy had put on her list was a biker jacket .. and she's 8!!! Golly where do they get it from? We just asked for an etch-a-sketch I love that your daughter has stated exactly which lipstick she wants .. no leaving it to chance I love a Christmas trifle .. I'm very envious Maddie had a black biker jacket when she was 8 too and Robbie got his last year! Must be an 8 thing! She was such a tomboy then but that all changed when she was 10 and especially when she went to secondary school. She is very sure about what she likes to wear, how her hair should be and her make up too.. When I was 12 I was wearing my brothers old clothes, not brushing my hair and thought lipstick was for writing notes to my Mum on the bathroom mirror. (Something she wasn't very happy about, don't know why!) My Mum makes a luvverly trifle, no blancmange in sight like my mother in laws thankfully! I should take pictures.. I'll just need to add a strait jackets to my Christmas shopping list so i can keep my Dad away from it long enough.. Must be an Alan thing! Right. I'd better get dressed before I have to take Robbie to school in my P'j's.. to cold for that this morning! Quote
frankie Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Thanks Athena, pesky puppy has decided she prefers 6am these past 2 days, it has been a little colder so maybe I'll try a cosier fleece in her bed tonight.. and maybe try to go to bed a little earlier. That's the bit i'm not so good at as I like to read in bed! Reading in bed is the best... It's hard to fall asleep now without reading first, if one had to try... Not nice at all! You know, I feel for you having to get up to take Jojo out... Because... There have been a few mornings when I've woken up to the sound of the neighbors' puppy barking to get out! If it was a kid, I would be hella annoyed, but because it's the dog, I can't be mad... Although a kid wouldn't scream in the morning to get out for a wee, would they? Although you actually have to get up and go out, I can go back to sleep... So it's not the same. But I can imagine it! You have my sympathies. I have a soothing voice I use for the dogs, when I use it on the kids they often get nervous though as it's usually be trying to hold my temper in! 'Okay, Mom is using her soothing voice... She's about to flip... Let's try and be nice now, easy does it, easy does it...' Obi is just a bundle of nerves when he meets people, unfortunately he shows it by getting grumpy.. he is best ignored then sometimes he will come forth to greet, he can normally suss out a genuine person (especially if they are carrying treats ) I will try and remember to leave him be and ignore him as much as he likes, and let him come to me if he so pleases And have some treats you approve of in my pockets Maybe in my handbag... It will fit more... I've not tried rolling in fox wee or anything worse, I'm sure she wouldn't be at all offended and would probably try to roll on me! That would be fun for the onlookers, but maybe not so much for you... I bet Jojo would think it's a fun game and get all messy! I think the safest bet is not to try it... I'm so glad I can't overdose on books, not that there is any danger of that, the speed I am reading at present hee hee! I think I will read Of Mice and Men first of the Steinbecks, I read it as a teen and I'm hoping it will be as good now as it was then.. That's a good choice. It's a really great novel Maddie had a black biker jacket when she was 8 too and Robbie got his last year! Must be an 8 thing! Well as long as they are asking for the jacket and not the bike... Quote
chaliepud Posted November 24, 2013 Author Posted November 24, 2013 Sari, Obi is a fan of any food so anything you choose would be fine, obviously meaty things are always a favourite but the meatier the treat the faster the drool will flow! Not with Jojo, she is too ladylike to drool. I thought I could imagine Maddie asking for a motorbike but then I remembered the hair, she would never participate in something that would give her helmet hair voluntarily! She was horrified at the school ski meeting on Wednesday when they said the kids MUST wear helmets, her first thought was her hair!! Despite my best efforts I am now 6 books better off after yesterday. It was my youngest sons Christmas Fair and they have a second hand book room where I picked up - Alone In Berlin - Hans Fallada and Woman's Hour: Celebrating 60 Years of Women's Lives - John Murray (I bought this more for my M-I-L) I also received Newes from the Dead (Mary Hooper) from the lovely Claire, thank you Claire! Kay and Janet have already enjoyed it so I am highly optimistic I will too. From another friend (a Cattle Dog friend on Facebook who also loves books) I received three Elizabeth Taylor books - A View of the Harbour Angel Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont She isn't an author I've come across but the reviews for her books look favourable on Amazon so will give them a go. Alone in Berlin has gotten great reviews on here, I hope you enjoy the book I think I remember Ian recommending it, and possibly others too and I am rather keen on books set in this period so fingers crossed I like it! How nice of you to think of your M-I-L I haven't read any Elisabeth Taylor either but i like the sound of Mrs Palfrey At The Claremont , i checked it out on the website & my local library has a copy due back in January, i guess i can wait that long Quote

I'm hoping she will like the Women's Hour book as she has been listening to the programmes for probably almost as many years as it has been going! She may have read it already of course. It's strange how Elizabeth Taylor has kept below the radar for this long.. Maybe if we all like her we should shout her name from the rooftops? Of course we would have to make it clear exactly which Elizabeth Taylor we are referring too! Quote
