I loved trick or treating at Halloween when I was a kid, but I lived on a small estate where everyone knew everyone else and it was safe to go from door to door in our little groups. As we went around, you were guaranteed that at least half a dozen grown ups could see you at all times due to the amount of front doors open to kids in costume. Unfortunately, as we moved to Scotland when I was 11, I only really got a couple of years out of it before I was too old for it. I did still enjoy getting dressed up and answering the door though!

It's a different story nowadays. Xan is only 4 years old and we don't actually know anyone around us. It's sad that we don't know our neighbours, but that's how it is in the city. Although we live in an estate, it's a pretty big one and there's no way I'd take Xan around to knock on the doors of strangers, even if they just live across the street from us.

As it is, Xan isn't really very fond of dressing up, so it wasn't an issue this year. We did carve a pumpkin though. I asked Xan what he wanted on it, he told me. I drew it, he corrected my mistakes and made me make changes. Then he approved the design and I carved it. We bought an edible pumpkin, rather than one of the huge tasteless ones, so I made spicy pumpkin soup with the flesh. It was delicious!

I was working on Halloween night, so I got dressed up for work - I donned fangs and wore some of my more romantic-looking clothes instead of my uniform. Dale says nobody came to our door, which was fine by him because he hates Halloween. He switches off the lights ad pretends nobody is home.

He gets a bit humbuggy about Xmas too though - LOL!
