Kylie Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 New month, new thread! I'm a few chapters into The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling. I've also been reorganising my books, and my new bookcases in the lounge room look quite nice now. I'll post some pics soon.
Brian. Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Last month saw my mojo returning after it's usual dip during the summer. Even though I have got quite a large TBR pile I am venturing into London tomorrow on a book hunting trip. In true book geek style I have made a list of about a dozen book shops and markets that I intend to visit.
anisia Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I'm very curious about The Casual Vacancy, hope you are enjoying it! I finished Last Breath by Rachel Caine this morning, it's book 11 of The Morganville Vampires series. Glad I finally gave it a shot, so much better than the last couple of volumes.
bree Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I've been holidaying at my mum's and haven't touched a book for almost a week now . I should get back to Angela's Ashes - I have two-thirds of it left. I liked how it's written (it is much more engaging that Paddy Clarke)
chaliepud Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Finished Hollow Pike this morning, another excellent YA read, thanks for the recommendation Michelle. Will start Paranormalcy for the October reading group later today..
Karsa Orlong Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 420 pages into The Owl Killers, so may finish it today
wordsgood Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Ooh, I'm jealous. Those are about the only type of shopping trips I actually enjoy. Provided of course that my mule, er husband, is following quietly along to carry my haul. Hope you find lots of great buys. Good luck! Ruth Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 New month, new thread! I'm a few chapters into The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling. I've also been reorganising my books, and my new bookcases in the lounge room look quite nice now. I'll post some pics soon. Will be interested to read your thoughts on The Casual Vacancy. My mum bought it the other day, and I'm hoping to borrow it once she has read it. Looking forward to your pics too I'm about 2/3 of the way through Tatiana and Alexander, and still thoroughly enjoying it. It's weird, because I can see the (sometimes obvious) flaws in this book, but I just can't put it down. It's the second book in a trilogy, and I want to read the third one soon.

If so I loved her Company of Liars .. how did you find it Steve? (and don't say in a bookshop )
Karsa Orlong Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Is that Karen Maitland? If so I loved her Company of Liars .. how did you find it Steve? (and don't say in a bookshop ) Dammit! Okay, I found it on Amazon Yes, it's Karen Maitland. I liked Company of Liars a lot, but I think this one is better all round - providing it has a good ending
Kell Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I've not long finished Paranormalcy by Kiersten White - very good indeed. If anyone's interested, it's this month's Reading Circle choice, so if you fancy coming along to discuss it, you can find the thread HERE.
Kylie Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 I'm up to chapter 6 of The Casual Vacancy, and they're pretty short chapters. It's a bit difficult to get a feel for it so far because I'm still being introduced to all the characters. I have a feeling this is going to be a difficult one to review.
lauraloves Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Ive downloaded a couple of kindle books Friends With Full Benefits - Luke Young Nine Steps to Sara - Lisa Olsen
chesilbeach Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Finished Hollow Pike this morning, another excellent YA read, thanks for the recommendation Michelle. I tried the sample of Hollow Pike yesterday and bought the book this morning as I'd enjoyed it so much, and I've just gone and downloaded Paranormalcy for the reading circle too!
Kidsmum Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Had a lazy day today & managed to finish Gone With The Wind such a good read, wasn't sure what to follow this with so i've gone for a short book Up At The Villa by Somerset Maugham.
Weave Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I am reading 'The 100 year old who climbed out the window and disappeared' by Jonas Jonasson, its great, I don't want it to finish.
Devi Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 I'm still making my way through Dark World by Zak Bagans and Perfume the story of the murderer by Patrick Süskind.
bookmonkey Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Last month saw my mojo returning after it's usual dip during the summer. Even though I have got quite a large TBR pile I am venturing into London tomorrow on a book hunting trip. In true book geek style I have made a list of about a dozen book shops and markets that I intend to visit. Lucky you. I love those sort of trips. One year my dad gave me $100 for my birthday and the kids went away just after, so I spent a lovely few days just wandering through as many bookshops as I could find.

Going by the thread, a lot of people can't wait to see what you think of the novel! And I'm one of them (I had no idea you already had a copy ) Last month saw my mojo returning after it's usual dip during the summer. I'm expecting a full report later today almost halfway through The Slap now How are you getting along with it so far? I'm still making my way through Dark World by Zak Bagans and Perfume the story of the murderer by Patrick Süskind. How are you liking Perfume? I really loved it when I read it I'm currently reading a Finnish novel, Sininen hatturasia. I really want to finish it today so I could get into one of my wishlist reads that I've managed to snatch up from the library I'm also thinking if I should spend today going to charityshops to see if there were any books there... it's been such a long time!
Kylie Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 Going by the thread, a lot of people can't wait to see what you think of the novel! And I'm one of them (I had no idea you already had a copy ) I know! It's been so long since I've reviewed a book - the pressure is too much! (Wow, if I get this way about a review, I can only imagine how poor Rowling felt when she published the last few HP novels!) I'm also thinking if I should spend today going to charityshops to see if there were any books there... it's been such a long time! I agree! It has been way too long. Good luck! I bought some books today: Agatha Christie: A Pocketful of Rye, The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side and Sleeping Murder Kahlil Gibram The Prophet And a couple of grammar-type books.
anisia Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Started The Children's Book by A.S. Byatt and so far it's good! I'm a bit bothered by the lack of dialogue which is replaced by the passive (if my memory of the English grammar, which I never tried to learn, serves me right), I just find it a bit weird. Still, so far enjoying the book a lot.
karen.d Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 I went to the library across the road and borrowed the following books (In Spanish): 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'- Roald Dahl 'The Chronicles of Narnia' (The first book)- C.S Lewis 'Emile and the Detectives'- Erich Kästner I hope I will be able to read these. I'm on chapter 6 of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', so far, so good!
Sofia Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 (edited) How are you getting along with it so far? Not too bad....it's not exactly going in the direction I expected, but that could end up being a good thing...have you read it? Edited October 4, 2012 by Sofia
