Paid for Reviews?

I personally don't trust payed publications/reviews, I learnt from people in the publishing industry about some of the stuff that goes on behind doors. Now I am not saying they are all like this, I'm sure there are legit publishers out there, but what I heard put me off enough to not trust most.

 

I tend to go by word of mouth, friends, and forums like this. That's just me though.

I don't think I could trust a review that had been paid for either, I think it does suggest that there's some pressure on the reviewer to put a positive spin on books that aren't very good.

But I only ever really use this forum to look at book reviews, so I suppose I don't really have that problem
