As some of you may now know I am a huge horror fan!! :P I have been trying to find some really good short stories out there. I have read a few of Stephen Kings short stories (and I am sorry to say this, truly!) I haven't found one I really like.

I have read a few on the net including on Wyrd Books and Black Static. Just wondering if anyone has come across any they would recommend?

Not sure if you've read any of his work, but horror and short-stories springs Edgar Allen Poe to mind.

I agree with Edgar Allen Poe. If you're after classic horror stories, you could look into Wordsworth's Tales of Mystery and Imagination series. They're collections of short stories written by many well-known authors (Bram Stoker, MR James, Henry James, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu...). There's a list of them at the Book Depository. They're all very cheap, but being classics, you can probably find them online for free.

OOh thanks everyone, will give these a go and let you know how I get on.

Thanks for your replies.

I read the short horror stories by Edgar Allan Poe and my favourite is The Black Cat.

The short horror stories by Oscar Wilde are fine too.

I found Poe rather lacking. :( However, Wilde and Le Fanu are both brilliant! :)

As already identified by posters above, both Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe are horror specialists and excellent short story writers (although I do find Poe a little old-fashioned these days). I seem to remember Roald Dahl wrote a few stories that were dark and macabre, if not horror in the strictest sense.

Clive Barker has a rad book called A to Z of Horror.  It's sorta his view on horror by the alphabet.  Example: H is for Harlequinade and he discusses the fear of clowns in culture and horror.  Its a gem on my shelf.  Sort of a "grab while the house burns down" book.
