I have a plot of a book and I need the title

Hello,

I have a short plot of a book (I need its title and author).

This book is for children.

 

There's a hero who is trapped by his foe. Now he needs to take part in a very dangerous competition.

He doesn't know that the competition is a death sentence for him or for a person he wants to share the victory with.

 

Any help would be appreciated .

Chris, I've tried to find something, but there's not much information to go on, if you know or can remember anything else it might help. Do you know if it's historical, modern day, futuristic or fantasy/sci-fi? Do you know roughly when it was published (I.e recent or 1950s, 70s etc)?

I'm sure that the autor is either from the UK or US or New Zeland or Australia.

and the book is for children and it's rather well-known.

I'm not sure about the time it was published ;/
