  1. Do you visit your local library? Is it any good? Is there a good selection, or do you often have to request your book from another branch? How friendly are the staff? :(

I visit my local library quite often and it is a very good one. They usually get all the major releases in pretty quickly. The staff are very nice and talkative as well. It also has a lot of places to sit and read if you want to.

  2. I've been inspired tonight but I don't know where to start!

Obviously I must have seen a hundred adaptations but I've never read a single one of her books. (Though I did name one of my Blythe dolls after her! :D) Ideally I'm not looking for anything Poirot, simply because I think I'll know them too well. I'm leaning towards A Caribbean Mystery but again thats based solely on the fact I like the tv versions. I'd love some recommendations that would be completely new to me. Thanks for your help.

You could start with 'And Then There Were None.' The first Christie book I read was a Poirot story called 'Peril At End House.'

  3. Hi all,

I've just joined, I've been looking at different book forums for a while and this place seemed alot friendlier than the rest so picked you guys

I'm an avid sci fi/fantasy reader. I've read most/all of the books by J.R.R Tolkein, Terry Pratchett, Phillip Pullman, Jonathan Stroud, J.K. Rowling and a few others. I can't seem to kick the teenage books despite the fact I've just turned 22

I'm halfway through the last book in Jonathan Stroud's Triology (The Bartimaeus Triology) and have just bought a new book called Miss Peregrins home for peculiar children which looks fab. Plus its a new author which is a big thing for me as I usually stick to ones I know! Anyway, hi from me

Hi, I'm new too. I also love Sci-Fi and Fantasy, and am a big Harry Potter fan! Welcome!

  4. Anyone here heard of Phil Rossi? He has written a number of Sci-Fi/Horror novels which are outstanding in my opinion. Check out his website:http://www.thephilrossiexperience.com/philrossinet/ He also plays in a band, talented guy! Another great writer in a similar mould is Scott Sigler.http://www.scottsigler.com/

  5. That would be a huge negative. I had a steady stream of Western movies and such shoved down my throat as a child and I just can't stand them anymore. Same with Country and Western music. I am much more into Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror.

Really? Fair enough. I love Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror myself. :)

  6. Hi Clive... welcome to the forum! LOTR and Harry Potter are some of my favourite reads too. If you like Sci-Fi/Fantasy then I can heartily recommend the current book I'm reading called The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss - extremely well-written and compelling read. In places it reminds me of a cross between Harry Potter and LOTR :readingtwo:

Hi. Yes, I've actually read In The Name Of The Wind. It was very good indeed. I've got the second book The Wise Man's Fear on my bookshelf to be read. My brother was telling me that the third book was supposed to be out in August, but has been delayed.

Sending you a warm welcome from Texas. I am new to the forum as well, Clive. It's a great group and they are quite welcoming and fun to talk to. Hope you enjoy your time here as much as I have so far.

Thanks. Texas? Cool! Do you read Westerns by any chance? I love 'em.

  7. I have recently got into fantasy and I have been told to read his books as well as Raymond Feist.

I have got hold of these David Eddings bookd really cheap off ebay:

    Polgara the sorceress

All the Elenium books and all the Tamuli books

Do these books have to be read in specific order of series?

If so I will have to get the others off ebay or from charity shops

What do people think of Raymond Feist too

I think with Eddings, it's best to read the Belgariad series first. Then the Mallorean. I've also read the Elenium series, but not the Tamuli or any of his others. The only Feist book I have read is Faerie Tale, which I think is a stand-alone.

  8. Hello Everyone, My name's Clive and I love reading! I am interested in a lot of different genres. If pressed I would say Sci-Fi/Fantasy is my favourite genre. My favourite book of all time is Lord of the Rings. I also really love the Harry Potter novels and anything Doctor Who related.
