  1. Welcome to the forum. You seem like a busy reader :D . I hope you have a great time here. I've loved it so far. I think its definitely made me read more and I'm getting quite a list of books I need to buy!

  2. I wouldn't say I was told to read Jane Eyre more talked into it by an old friend. Its just not something I'd ever wanted to read. Anyway I really went at it wanting to hate it but alas no! I loved it and it had me openly crying on a train...

As for school I remember thinking its as if they had purposefully gone for the most boring dire book ever and got 30ish copies to torture us with. Or maybe its just the atmosphere of it. We read a Sylvia Plath short story at school I remember hating where as later she became a favourite author. I have my sister, friends and the Manics(!) to thank much more than any teacher or school for my love of literature and poetry. Sad isn't it?

Oh I think it's much worse when you've been wanting to read something thinking it will be brilliant for it to be awful and disappointing.

  3. I've been inspired tonight but I don't know where to start!

Obviously I must have seen a hundred adaptations but I've never read a single one of her books. (Though I did name one of my Blythe dolls after her! :D) Ideally I'm not looking for anything Poirot, simply because I think I'll know them too well. I'm leaning towards A Caribbean Mystery but again thats based solely on the fact I like the tv versions. I'd love some recommendations that would be completely new to me. Thanks for your help.

  4. I kind of went off Waterstones when they sacked my sister! Having her work in a local one was cool too because I could get 20% of everything and if she was on the info desk I could ask all those questions I'd be too embarrassed to ask normally. I much prefer second hand bookshops, independent ones or charity shops though. Yes maybe not the choice but you get some great things! I love my 70s copy of Wilkie Collins The Woman In White! :)

  5. I also ran through Sheffield train station! However, my son in law comes from Sheffield and his parents live there, so I do have sort of connection.

I was going to Barnsley! My first time. I sprinted through and in about 5 minutes I was on another train. Quite stressful!

  6. Hello!

I must admit sci-fi and fantasy aren't things I read much and I'm a total horror wuss though I really want a copy of The First Men In The Moon, does that count?! :D

I hope you have fun here. I'm new too I've made a slow start but everyone's been nice.

  7. Most of my books have page numbers noted on the front page (in pencil!) that remind me of where my favorite quotes are. I also have loads dotted about in varies documents on my computer. I used to have a wall covered in typed out quotes I'd done on the computer and stuck up in my room! All on purple and lilac paper. I'm not sure if thats a bit mad.

I'm completely quote obsessed. Books, tv, films, songs, anywhere...

  8. Mel and Sue turn it from a bog standard cooking show into a proper piece of entertainment - both funny when they find something they like and wolf it down after the judges have left  I don't know if it was Light Lunch, but I remember watching a show they did but I thought it was on at about 5pm, but maybe I recorded it during the day then watched it when I got home from work? Either way, it was brilliant, and I love the two of them together.

I can't believe Rob didn't go this week. You can't drop a cake on the floor one week then produce 24 tarts that are completely wrong from the pastry to the filling to the topping, and get away with it, no matter how much promise you have. One of the two you could get away with, but both? Still, I don't think the guy who went would have won anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter.

I completely agree Mel & Sue are totally right for it. I think you are thinking of "Late Lunch" which was the same sort of program only they moved it to the later time slot. Anyone remember the band? Steve, Matt, Dillon & Dan! They always had a different food based pun name every week. :giggle2:

Yeah I thought Rob was going, he's pretty disaster prone. I must admit I do have a bit of a soft spot for him with his floppy hair and all. He'll probably be out next week unless he plays a blinder which seems unlikely!

I missed it this week must catch up on the repeats but I loved the last series, did you see the one off prog they did where the 3 finalists did 2 types of wedding cakes a traditional and a modern twist they could chose....fantastic..

I always watch it on the iplayer. I'm terrible with remembering when things are on. I almost have nostalgic memories of being able to miss things! Its so hard to do now. No I don't think I remember the wedding cakes. I didn't watch the whole last series either.

never been much of a baker (love doing the mixing and everything but am always disappointed with the results) but I have been itching to make lemon tart since watching prog 2 even though I have never made pastry, I don't like pastry and I am not all that keen on lemons either.

I tend to stick to buns or flapjack in the main now I want to branch out! I know what you mean too I'm not over keen on lemon tart but now feel like trying to make one. Bet someone would eat it!

Thanks for the heads up on the book too. I hate finding out the winners early. My sister normally ends up texting me and telling me  She's always doing that with Masterchef.

Yeap Simon is gone. He was pretty so so the whole time. Yay for Jason as top baker too.

  9. I just caught up on Episode 2 and I want people to geek out with! It really makes me want to bake too which I feel like I have don't in ages. :(

I think I only started watching at the back end of the last series because I realised it was Mel & Sue. Boy I miss "Light Lunch"...anyone remember that?

I figured I had to start a topic here too because after scanning the others I don't seem to watch / like any of them. I'm so bad with popular culture!

  10. Oh thats great! Glad to help.

I tend to have a main book and a train book myself. My Nana used to always have an upstairs and downstairs book on the go at the same time too. :)

  11. I've never read Moby Dick though I've had that feeling of something being a slog rather than a joy. I really hate to give up on books but shamefully I have a few times. Some things just aren't going to be for you (or thats how I look at it) and it's totally outweighed by the times you think you're going to hate something and end up loving it. That's happened to me a few times and its the best!

As for making it easier, I find a little break helps as long as its not to long. Or just filling time if you have half an hour with it rather than spending a hours with the book. I can only do that if I can't put it down! But then I've always been like that.

  12. Right now I am slogging through Moby Dick and just don't think I am going to be able to make it through.

I know how that feels, I hope you make it through! Welcome to the forum I'm pretty new myself but so far I'm really liking it here. Every ones really friendly and I've had some great help with book recommendations.

  13. Hello.

Its great you looked him up he's a total inspiration to me. I completely recommend his spoken word poetry cd. It's so powerful. Plus even more impressive when you know he overcame a very bad stammer to find his voice. I also have a collection of his work called "fuse". He he I'm a bit fanatical about him as I rarely come across people who read / know of him.
