Can you truly enjoy a book you've been forced to read?
Delilah replied to emelee's topic in General Book Discussions
I have the same problem when trying to join a book club. Haven't joined one locally because I'm not even remotely interested in the books they are reading! I have to have some affinity for a book selection being at the top of the book charts or the winner of a prize will just not do it for me! -
As LittleW says I have no more room in my house for books! I only buy books I really love and want to keep!

Well I didn't know that about Finland. I don't think we have anything like that in the USA. Or if we do I don't know about it! The question of the veil is complex. It all goes back to the way you are brought up. Some things become normal for us because we grow up with it just like the Muslim women. But from the book it is clear that even then not all of them embrace it. Maybe if I get it correctly from the book it was that way because they had a period of not being required to wear it? Or did I misunderstand that part?

Thanks for giving a much more detailed observation of what I myself did find as drawbacks to this selection. The literary analyses were good and she should have included more about what her students thought of these books.

Yeah every romantic woman's wish! He's hot!

I read online that its supposed to be haunted! I've visited a lot of historic sites in the US that say they are haunted as well but as of yet haven't seen anything! But then I never spent a night at a haunted inn!
-
Would love to visit it of course! I just visited London last year for a week.

I'm currently reading this again. I read it so long ago that I don't remember it anymore. I thought there were only moors in Yorkshire, I didn't know they also have moors in Cornwall. Also, I just learned that this inn still exists! Wow! I would love to stay there. This novel has all my favorite Gothic elements!

I agree it is very disturbing! But I do know a Muslim woman who wears the veil and will ardently defend its use. For the life of me, I can't understand why either!

I took it out in my public library and all they had was a large print edition which needless to say made the book 600 pages long. Nafisi's style of writing is good but I admit keeping track of who was who was difficult maybe because of the foreign names. All their stories were interesting and apalling at the same time. Sometimes, I hate to admit, I found the historical part about Iran rather tedious. I preferred the women's personal stories more. The book did inspire me to want to read more of the books mentioned. After reading it I sought out "Daisy Miller" and "The Great Gatsby." I loved the critical interpretations of these novels and how the women responded to them. Their feelings about the veil is in stark contrast to other Muslim women who I talked to. These women felt that it was their personal choice to wear it and felt comfortable with it though not being Muslim myself I find it hard to believe but everyone has their choice and culture. I respect that.

I love WH! When I was a teenager I loved it better than Jane Eyre. I lost some interest in Jane Eyre when she leaves Rochester and goes to live with the Rivers. The scenes between Rochester and Jane are so compelling that when they separate, I began to lose interest. Cathy and Heathcliff's love seems more primal and say less intellectual that Rochester and Jane. But it is compelling as a love that transcends death! The scene where Heathcliff digs Cathy's grave so he can see her is vividly etched in my memory!

Actually you're right Mephistoleles is pretty funny! There are some funny parts in there even thought its supposed to be a tragedy.

Just finished reading it! Absolutely wonderful although it is a tragedy but had such witty dialogue. I almost felt like reading the whole thing out loud! It is so poetic! Maybe I will try Dante's Inferno next!

Welcome Deidre. I'm relatively new here myself.

Yes I also once thought on starting a Master's degree in Library Science but then I realized I don't find library work stimulating enough! Maybe like what Kylie wants to do editor. Will have to check that book out by the guys who goes mad while achieving success! Sounds very interesting!

Oh Oscar Wilde was a terrific writer. I'm reading his plays now. So humourous! Give them a try next!

Currently reading the plays of Oscar Wilde. Finished Salome and now reading "Lady Windermere's Fan."

I was very disappointed with Zafon's The Angel's Game. Too many unaswered questions at the end. His style of writing throughout is enjoyable but the ending was really disappointing, IMO.

Am reading two books at once! Reading Lolita in Tehran for the August book circle here and "A Stranger in Mayfair"(an English mystery set in Victorian England) by Charles Finch. He has a series but I haven't read the earlier ones. I know its a mystery but would like a little more romance! I can't seem to find a book that has all those elements like mystery, suspense and romance. Yes I know there is romantic suspense books out there but I usually hate them the plots are so weak! Give me a good Gothic novel!

I actually quite like The Guardian myself although I only read it online.

I know exactly what you mean Ben! Hard to find the right book that does that to me as well!

Aren't cats just lovely? My cat loves to bite as well! You can look at her and admire you but don't you dare touch! Sometimes she will allow me briefly to scratch her head or under her neck before she decides to go for the bite!

Yes was good a little predictable! Good way to watch a film though, haha!

Really want to see the new Jane Eyre film! Also Red Red Riding Hood. Neither has come out on Redbox so still waiting. Last film I saw was Beastly, a remake of Beauty and the Beast with Vanessa Hudgeons. It's was ok. Not nearly as good as Disney's Beauty and the Beast though!

Ah Pixie you seem as sentimental as I. I almost cried as well. That's why I thought it was so beautiful.
