  1. I just made an Amazon order and Vlad: The Last Confession by C.C. Humphreys managed to sneak its way into my basket ;):smile2:

Good book, hope you enjoy it!

I've finished Things Fall Apart, which I rather enjoyed. I think I'm going to start either Catch-22 or The Count of Monte Cristo next. I should probably finish one of the other books I have on the go first though!

  2. I guess it depends what kind of sf you're looking for. Are you looking for something that's like a particular tv series?

Not really! I just usually stick to tv series as I wasn't quite sure whereabouts in the sci-fi genre to dive in for books. I'd rather read something thats not like a tv series tbh (unless its as epic as BSG).

Thanks for the list of authors to try! I'd heard of them before but now I'll give them a go, and I'll see if my library has Gateway or The Forever War.

    :)

  3. Why have I never noticed this thread before?

    I love manga (and anime).

My current fave mangas are Berserk (the only series I'm actually buying so far), Bleach, Naruto, Claymore, Bride of the Water God and Hellsing (although thats finished).

  4. I picked this up in Waterstones a couple weeks back, along with The Forever War, but I couldn't bring myself to buy them. I love my sci-fi (although admittedly I've never really ventured outside the Black Library book-wise), but I'm a bit wary of the older sci-fi books. I guess I'm worried about how outdated they'll seem.

Are they as outdated as I suspect? I'm really craving sci-fi atm, and with no decent new series to watch I've turned to books

  5. Thanks for the comments on The Count of Monte Cristo.... I'm looking forward to reading it, but then I'm not. I think it's because I remember being forced to read classics at school, when in fact we were too young to really understand/appreciate them (plus they were Hardy - so depressing!). I'm trying to get stuck into the 1001 list though, so I'm game!

pickle - hope you enjoy Black Magic Sanction! I loved it <3

  6. plan on going to the bookstore a bit later to pick up Dear John by Nicholas Sparks.

I just ordered that :( looking forward to reading it.

I got The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, and The Makioka Sisters by Junichiro Tanizaki through the post today. Wow, for some reason I never expected TCoMC to be such a thick book!

Once I've finished reading Raven: Blood Eye by Giles Kristian, I might start one of those two. Knowing me though, they'll probably be on my TBR pile for weeks.

  7. Lol! Everyone elses made me chuckle, so I thought I'd have a go.

Unfortunately Hannah also has suffered with severe mood swings related to being in season and can become very protective over her new companion.

Unfortunately, Hannah was captured while trying to cross the border from Yugoslavia to Hungary, and was immediately imprisoned by the Hungarian fascists. (Love this one! I've just put it as my Facebook status)

Unfortunately, Hannah is a bit of a monster. Her self-absorption is breathtaking.

Unfortunately, Hannah may have a mutation that hasn't been seen before.

I got up to page six then decided I'd better stop lol.

  8. Gardens of The Moon throws you right into the centre of things, with everything already in motion, and asks you to either sink or swim. He hints at huge, earth-shattering events, which everyone seems to know about except you.

My first foray into the series was when I found House of Chains in a charity shop many years ago. I bought it and read most of it even though I knew it was several books into a series. I remember something about a horse called Havok, blood oil(?), wooden swords that were actually quite epic, and a group of weird humanoid things that were somehow linked to giant carvings of dogs. Lol. But what I also remember is that what I read I enjoyed, even though I didn't understand a lot of what was going on! I ended up giving that book back to a charity shop once when I was having a clear out, and forgot all about the series.

So anyway, I was reminded of the series several times last year and I finally started reading Gardens of the Moon a few weeks ago. But I found it difficult to get into. I don't like to be spoon fed, but Erikson seems to go to the other extreme (doesn't help that I like to read fast, but with this there was so much going on all at once I had to slow down considerably). I certainly wasn't swimming, but I wasn't quite sinking either. More like wading neck-deep through molasses. However, your post has reminded me that actually its the kind of series I usually enjoy. So I will try again. I'm not sure when though, as I have about 10 books here with bookmarks in, and a stupid amount on my TBR list *blushes*.

And now that I've driven myself mad over this post for over an hour I think I need to go and lie down :D

*hand you a glass of (insert preferred beverage here)*

This is a great post! If I hadn't already heard of the series I'd definitely try it after reading this. As it is you've got me picking GotM back up to give it another go :D

  9. The Painted Man by Peter V Brett

I loved that book! Can't wait for the next.

I'd recommend Elizabeth Moon's Paksenarrion trilogy (which you can now get in one book called 'The Deed of Paksenarrion').

I'd also recommend The Long Price series by Daniel Abraham.

Aaaand the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson.

I'd better go now before I get carried away.

Oh! Almost forgot - The Adamantine Palace by Stephen Deas

  10. My favourite is when I borrowed a book from one of my closest male friends that he said he couldn't finish. Marking the page where he'd stopped reading was the wrapper from a sanitary towel :D I have no idea where he got it from!

    Lol! How freakishly random! :D

I have a few bookmarks, and my fave is a leather one with tassels. They're never to hand when I need them though (naturally) so I end up using whatevers handy, which is usually torn strips of paper or tissue or something lol. I'll never fold corners down though, even if its a beaten up old book I found in a charity shop.
