Thanks Books Do going to read this one. Still reading through all your other reviews so will most likely nab a few more ! -
My daughter read the Kelly Armstrong books Chiara and enjoyed them a lot. I read the Dice Man a long time ago, I didn't rate it very high at all. It started off very exciting but ran out of steam. Have you finished the exams now?

The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing
vodkafan replied to Maureen's topic in Previous Reading Circle Books
Yes me please! 1. What did you think of this book? It was an OK and slightly quirky story. It ended quite suddenly and unexpectedly for me, I was only up to 47% on my kindle, I was like "What?" The rest was extracts of her other stories, haven't read those yet but her book list looked interesting. 2. What do you think about ‘The Dream’? I think they were a little selfish . Although David wanted independence from his father he was quite happy to accept his money, and Harriet could not have coped without Dorothy. This early part of the novel did invoke some strange feelings in me as I spent 20 years with a woman who just wanted to keep having babies even when it meant the end of our marriage. 3. What do you think about Harriet as a mother and David as a father? In as far as they did not mistreat the kids they were OK. And as long as the kids they had were normal kids, they would have been fine. But they soon came apart as soon as they got presented with a real challenge. Harriet failed the other children especially Paul when Ben came along. David was too distant and dreamy. Yes I agree with everyone else that they were inadequate as parents. 4. What do you think about David and Harriet’s marriage? Well in fairness all marriages are an experiment aren't they? These two had never dated anyone else so had never tried anybody else on for size. They did not seem to have much understanding of the other nor any real passion for each other. David seemed most concerned that the kids should all have their own bedroom to hide in like he did. I liked his father a lot better. Because they did not have to struggle financially really (because of his dad) they didn't have to put much effort into the marriage. I guess a lot of couples are like that, they can sail on for years without the bubble bursting, but they are really like individual people living together rather than real partners. As soon as they hit a big problem they fell apart very quickly. However faced with a little caveman I would have done more than David did; I would have left home and took all the other children with me the night Harriet bought Ben back, to protect them all. Harriet made her choice. -
Hi Andie , I enjoyed your review of Magic Cottage, I read this a long time ago, It was so long ago I cannot remember the actual events of the story but strangely enough I do remember feeling exactly as you felt , that it was a weak ending and not very scary altogether. I read a lot of James Herbert when I was a teenager but I got bored of his style, which seemed to consist of creating a disposable character with a page or two of description and then killing them off in the next couple of pages. Well done for going out of your comfort zone and reading a Catherine Cookson just to check out her writing. You mentioned that you write (or want to write) so it definitely won't hurt to look at lots of styles of popular authors.

Just finished The Fifth Child will write my thoughts in the Reading Circle Group as soon as I can. -
That's a brilliant idea . Frankie must be in a unique position the most widely read person (in English) in her hometown,

I thought the best film that Jennifer Aniston has made so far was The Good Girl. Agreed she should pick her films a bit better- way too many vacuous comedies that are all the same. I think Chandler had the same problem when he switched to films- he always plays Chandler. He made one with Salma Hayek that was quite good, but he was still Chandler. Jolie probably is a bit over-rated now, I think she pushed herself to act well when she was younger (Girl Interrupted) but now she knows she can earn a lot of money just from her looks on-screen she doesn't try.

Easier to quit crack cocaine I think

I just watched Hunger Games at the cinema. We had to queue to get in , It was absolutely packed and there were queues waiting to go in for the next showing as we came out. I have never known that at a multiplex before. The audience in our particular showing was 95% teenage girls with their mothers so I was very glad I took two of my kids and didn't go on my own! The adverts were all for sanitary towels and spot cream talk about targeting a demographic. I enjoyed it and was thankful that what was in there was true to the book but there was something missing for me I am not sure what yet I will have to think about it some more. At the scene with Rue's death the row of girls behind us were all sobbing.

My exwife and I used to amuse ourselves greatly by imagining Jennifer Aniston in the film roles of Angelina Jolie. For instance can you see JA as Lara Croft or as Salt? We used to laugh ourselves fit to bust. On the other hand try to imagine Angelina Jolie as Rachel in Friends ?. She would just be the cow who stole everybodies boyfriends; she was not designed for female company.

Brilliant film. Did you like it Sofia? But it had the world's greatest living actress in it Frankie.! It must have been that Vince Vaughn bloke who ruined it.

I have certainly liked a story so much before I could almost eat it. Books can engage one on an emotional level or an intellectual one and all is good.

Sadly I haven't a clue Rick but I wish I did it sounds a great book! -
I can vouch that she was laughing out loud when reading.

Hi Poppy we intend to read them all. Some I have either already read or I have on my kindle to read. But I don't think Charmer has read any of them before.

A Moment Of Silence (or, The Observations of Miss Dido Kent) By Miss Anna Dean I picked this one to read first to pull me out of the black hole of despair my mojo was in after Catcher In The Rye. It worked a treat. This one is set in 1805 so I expected something a bit Austenesque. A spinster Aunt Dido has been called to attend her niece who's fiance has suddenly disappeared after a mysterious stranger turned up at the engagement ball. She no sooner gets to the large country house where her niece is staying when the body of a woman is found in the shrubbery. An inquest fails to even find out the identity of the victim. Aunt Dido feels that the two events may be connected and partly for her niece's sake and partly to satisfy her own curiosity she begins to investigate and soon finds that everybody in the great house seems to have something to hide. So this is something of a cross between an Agatha Christie and a Jane Austen novel, with parts of the story told in the form of letters from Dido to her sister, which is a quite Austenesque plot device. I think the author was trying for some gentle humour and romance (like the Amelia Peabody series perhaps) but that did not really work for me, However the plot moves along at a nice enough pace. I guessed the twist towards the end and the murderer also had been a suspect for me all along so no big surprises at the end .

Hi all, This is a bagful of books Charmer and I got from all the Charity shops in Rugby. Here is the list: Dark Legend Christine Feehan The Naked Civil Servant Quentin Crisp Resistance Anita Shreve The Amber Spyglass Philip Pullman The Good Thief Hannah Tinti Bruce Lee Fighting Spirit Bruce Thomas Velocity Dean Koontz Fasting ,Feasting Anita Desai My Lovers Lover Maggie O ‘ Farrell The Hungry Ghosts Anne Berry Misbehaving Sarah Harvey The Shadow Of The Wind Carlos Ruiz Zafon A short History Of Nearly Everything Bill Bryson Blood Of The Flood Terry Goodkind The Woman In Black Susan Hill I Choose To Live Sabine Dardenne Accidents In The Home Tessa Hadley Outcast Child Kitty Neale Star Of The Sea Joseph O’ Connor Seize The Night Dean Koontz A Moment Of Silence Miss Anna Dean Eragon Christopher Paolini The Wench Is Dead Colin Dexter Angela’s Ashes Frank McCourt The Venus Fix M J Rose King Of The World David Remnick The Gathering Anne Enright

Vodkafan's 2012 Reading List and Genre Challenge
vodkafan replied to vodkafan's topic in Past Book Logs
Thanks Julie, no we didn't have a system worked out , we will probably just read them as our fancy takes us and compare notes when we get around to it. . -
I looked for a thread on this book but could not find it. I found this book hard work and ultimately did not like it. I got it about the teenage angst thing, I did but I still did not like it. Adolescents are big on emotions but short on common sense. That's a given. This book just was simply labouring the point and for me, was ultimately pointless.

Still 75 kg. No matter how much I eat and excercise I can't seem to put any weight on. Another 5 kg would be good
