  1. I read this last year and really enjoyed it. I remember at the time thinking that it was very "filmic" so it doesn't surprise me that it's going to come out as a film. Have you read "The People's Act of Love"? It's set in Siberia and has a lot of similar themes.
  2. This is really interesting isn't it? Atticus Finch is a brilliant one, I find him really hard to top. I think the only other character who's stayed with me in the same way is Lang Rab /Long Rob in Sunset Song. I was so in love with him, he was my first book-love! I find something really appealing about Emma from, er, "Emma" too - I think it's her faults that make her quite likeable. I'll probably spend the next 2 days thinking about this now...
  3. I loved the Blind Assassin and Alias Grace but then felt really disappointed by Oryx and Crake. I think I'd bought it fully assuming that it would be my new "favourite book ever" so I was only ever going to feel disappointed! I still think she's a beautiful writer and any time I've heard her on the radio I feel like the world makes slightly (but only slightly) more sense.
  4. Aaah, the name! It was what my mum used to say when she wore a really unflattering outfit: "Do I look like Fat Nan the boxer?". We're a cowardly lot and no-one was ever brave enough to say "frankly, yes". Thanks for all the "welcomes" - what a nice bunch!
  5. Hello everybody, I'm Patricia. This seems like a friendly place so I thought I should introduce myself. I'm reading (and really enjoying) Suite Francaise at the moment but I'm looking forward to trying lots of new books through this board. Thanks, Patricia
