  1. 3. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Ohmygosh! I think this is the best book I have ever read! Not going to lie! My favorites so far are The Road, Ender's Game, and now this is added to the list:) i love how it was unpredictable and had amazing meaning behind it. Ugh, I have to watch the movie now (for school) and it makes me so mad! I have how the characters should look in my head and now they are making me change my views! haha!

    5 out of 5!

  2. Ironically, Dolores Claiborne (alongside Gerald's Game) is a Stephen King I couldn't deal with - I find his supernatural stuff less disturbing than his 'believable' stuff, I must say.

To Courtney I'd recommend Carrie - there are supernatural elements in it but it's more about a lonely girl wanting to fit in than anything else; only the ending is scary in the traditional sense and as it's quite a short book anyway it shouldn't be too much of a struggle.

Well, yues actually now that I think about it, I think that I agree with you bookjumper more, because I am scared about people coming and getting me (haha!) more than, say a monster. You know, stuff like that. What exactly is the Claiborne story? Well actually I think i will take Frankie's advice and move over to the King thread, we're very off topic:)

  3. Hmm, a very interesting dilemma you have! I guess The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon wasn't as bad as some of the others, but in my opinion it's the worst book by him, I found it really boring and just plain awful, I really hated reading that book :roll:The Stand is scary and it's a really long novel as well, but unless you don't mind longer novels then maybe you could read it.

I'm trying to think of a novel by dear SK which wouldn't be too scary and I can only think of a couple of them which might suit you. Dolores Claiborne is something that doesn't have anything supernatural to it, and it's dealing with a couple of crimes, nothing too scary. And a great novel it is :D

What also came to mind was Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption which is a short novel and it was originally published in Different Seasons. It's a really gripping prison story. Have you seen the movie? That's one of the best movies that has ever been made :D

I welcome other people's thoughts on Stephen King, maybe someone else has better suggestions? :jump:

Edit: You might also want to check out the thread on Stephen King and see if you can find something suitable there. I'm sure people on here would love to help you out with this if you ask them what they would recommend!

Aww that is a disappointment about the Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon! :D but i will definately try Dolores Claiborne and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption! I have never seen those movies, but I don't watch movies that much. Thanks!

Some had recommended The Stand by Steven King, but I realllyyy don't like anything scary:) do you think it would be fine? I know Steven King is a horror writer, but still.. Also have you read The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon by him? I heard these also weren't that bad.. I have always wanted to read something of Steven King's but i wasn't sure if i could manage it??

  5. I watched the first episode of the show, and it was....OK. Not great. But I can't compare it to the books, as I've never read them. It's a perfectly adequate show, but I think it's going to annoy me, so I won't be watching it anymore.

Exactly, never read them, watched the show, what? two times now i believe. It was alright, it's kind of addicting and annoying at the same time! So many characters, so many intertwined relationships. Do people not know how teenage lifes are anymore? Hahah, drama, drama, drama!

  6. I personally liked the Stephanie Meyer saga better.. i couldn't even get past the first Harry Potter book! When i was younger, i had gone to my friend's house and watched a part of one of the H.P. movies and had nightmares for a whole week!!!:) so, finally after all the praise i had head about them, i picked up the first one. It was alright, but i didn't feel like wasting my precious reading time on the other huge novels in the series, so i quit them! I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi, so that might be a reason i didn't like them. I loved the twilight saga, of course, i mean i'm a teenage girl and it is an adventurous love story, but like other people have said, it does get kind of annoying who Bella loves Edward sooo much, how he is so perfect and blah. But Edward is sweet! It annoyed me when the movie came out though.. Edward was supposed to be beautiful:p I hate how movies put different pictures into your head.

  7. definately ecplise! hmmm, what else? i believe i am rather looking forward to seeing alvin and the chipmunks squeakqual along with toy story two!

i hate it how at one time in a month (or more) there are periods where it looks like there is so many great movies that you want to see, but then at all other times there are no movies out! come on people.. spread it out!:D

ah! and i just saw avatar today and it was spectacular!

  8. 2. All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy

Yes! I enjoyed this book very much:) I like the hint of romance and the adventure. It got a bit gory (i hate scary things!) when he was burning out his bullet wound. I love horses, and i'm in spanish so, wohoo!

  9. Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Ok, we had to read this for school. Even Steven King said he loved this book (it was his choice of book that changed his life?) but i guess i just didn't understand it? Was there an undercover meaning or something? It was sooo hard to get through this book for me!

  10. Of course we still read books! Well, some of us at least. I think there are a few major reasons why you don't see us in the book stores. First of all, we have barely any money to go buy books, so, like me, we just go to the handy Library! Second, we don't have all that much time! Yes, you may think all the activites or whatever that we have consumes our, "good reading time", but for me it's mostly school work. My english teacher has us reading all sorts of things and some of them are tough! So, with all of my homework piling up, plus dance, and a social life (ah! i hope i still have one:) I barely ever have time to just sit back and read a good book like I have in the past.

  11. My dad has been recommending McCarthy's books to me.. I enjoy them, but are somewhat hard to understand. My first novel from him was the road, which I strongly recommend, but his method of not using many grammar marks and commonly having a sentence last a whole paragraph, sometimes get's confusing. Overall though, I do love his work.

I just finished reading All the Pretty Horses, which was a good western fiction. I felt very attached to all the characters, and i would be very happy to be Alejandara;) Does anyone have anything to say about this novel?

    Anymore recommendations from McCarthy?

  12. I totally understand! There are so many other books i want to read, but the Twilight series are so addicting! A good book makes you feel involved in the story and these books do just that. It might be that I just like romance novels, but I think it's something more:) My favorite is definately Breaking Dawn!
