Did anyone see Sue Townsend on 'The Book Show' recently? I record this programme on Sky Plus but haven't got round to seeing this one yet.

An old episode of Bullseye. The contestants seemed to be better at actually playing darts in the old days..

I actually preferred Sleath to Haunted, in my opinion the story had a far better setup and a terrifying conclusion.
Well, that seems promising. It will certainly be interesting to revisit the character of David Ash.

Just finished Haunted recently, and I thought it was spendid! Not too long but in-depth enough to be satisfying, and as others have said, it's an old fashioned kind of ghost story in many ways. Which is refreshing, as a spooky atmosphere is often more effective than just blood and gore. (Though I do like his more bloody stuff like The Fog as well).
I was lucky enough to get a sort of middle-sized hardback of The Ghosts of Sleath for 99p from a charity shop a couple of months back too, and as that is apparently a kind of sequel, I'll look forward to that.
I think Nobody True will be my next one of his to read though.

I haven't read The Historian yet but many on here have and have loved it; I believe there's a dedicated thread in the Horror section you might like to peruse I have seen the edition you refer to and indeed it's very snazzy, although I'm saving up for the New Annotated .
Thanks 'Jumper! I just read that thread (through an advanced search) and it has increased my interest. I still have a lot to read right now, but will bear The Historian in mind for the near future (I'm sure I've seen the paperback of it at Oxfam before IIRC).

Actually one of my birthday gifts was a nice new edition of Dracula - it's a classy looking blood-red hardback, with a foreword from Elizabeth Kostova, who has written a book called The Historian which apparently ties in with the Dracula concept, which seems intriguing although it's a recent novel.

like in the 'Sinbad' films...

That amount of money - though vast to most people - would probably just be pocket change to Katie, anyway...

Generally, one, if we're mainly talking about novels. I can be in the process of reading a novel, and then read short stories from elsewhere before finishing the novel, but that probably doesn't count - the same with books that are more reference books and such.

touching themselves inappropriately. A detective...

No, the smell was unbearable. I did find a copy in a discount book shop not too long ago for

The description said that it was in near new condition. I left them a piece of my mind through my feedback though.
Quite right too, sir! Did you keep it anyway?

A small crowd gathered, and...

Well, I remember the character of The Master from the 1980's, as an eerie bearded fellow - so initially, when John Simms took the role, at first I thought it was way too different. However, I thought he made the role his own, and injected some pantomime villain type humour that made the character really watchable.

I would say a born reader, as I've always loved reading from a very early age. I also have a great love of music, and tend to go through phases of either devoting my time to one or the other, or both equally.

Welcome! I've only been here a few weeks myself, but your splendid avatar caught my eye..!

I don't recall intentionally giving up on a book once it's been started - but maybe stopping and planning to return to it, but not getting round to doing so! There are a few books with bookmarks halfway through! But generally I like to finish them.
A good thing about books of short stories is that one can dip in and out of them easier than with a novel.

Is noise allowed? The TV or the children?
Usually, I prefer silence. As others have said, the television on in the background can be fine, or some music, depending on the type of book it is.
If nature provides a soundtrack from outdoors, with blustery weather or a thunderstorm, then that can set an appropriate atmosphere for a lot of the stuff I like to read!
Indoors or out? Morning or Evening?
Always indoors for me, and any time of the day or night. My working hours are often late afternoon/evening, which means I can read during the day, and then late at night if I don't need to wake early.
Do you read on sofa or do you prefer to snuggle in bed with a good read?
On a sofa or other chair, generally.
I don't think I've ever read a book in the bath, as some people do. I'd be too concerned about getting the pages splashed, or dropping the book completely, to be able to concentrate!

I don't either, but I think before long everyone will start to like Matt Smith. He will bring something new to the show.
Yeah, when David Tennant first appeared I thought he was way too OTT, and thought he'd end up being a bad replacement for Christopher Eccelston - but the audience quickly warmed to him. So maybe it'll be the same for Matt Smith, despite many people's reservations about him being very young for the role and such.
John Simm tends to steal the show whenever he appears as The Master though, IMO!

I haven't been following it too closely (well, I've probably seen more than I care to admit to myself..!) But I would imagine Jimmy White is in with a good chance of winning this year, or at least going far.

I'd say a chapter, unless we're talking Victor Hugo and his 100-page chapters, would be socially acceptable - I certainly would feel like a thief reading more, and would buy it immediately if I wanted to read more. After all, that 'I need to know what happens' feeling tells you that you're bound to like this, right?
That seems fair enough. I can imagine an eagle-eyed member of staff being suspicious about any more than a couple of pages, though.

I am almost ashamed to admit that I completely missed this thread, as I was not on the forums a lot at the time of you making it. However, I'd still like offer you a slightly belated welcome to BCF, even if I am 20 days or so late. Hope you are settling in and enjoying it here.
Yes, shame on you, sir! Seriously, thanks for the welcome.. and I like it here so far.

I came across this one today and love it!
'This goes along with another belief of mine: that everyone else my age is an adult, whereas I am merely in disguise' - Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood
This is exactly how I feel most of the time!
That's a great quote! I can identify with that in a way. (Although sometimes it feels quite the opposite, when witnessing the abhorrent behaviour of many other 'adults'..!)

Splendid, I'll take some time to watch it. I liked the early Adrian Mole books when I was younger.
