You may also wish to try Chris Mooney - American author with a great female lead character Derby McCormick CSI. Highly recommend The Missing and Secret Friend. You could do worse than also try Deviant Ways by the above although McCormick isn't in this the other characters are 'entertaining' - go on, enjoy!!

I got Under The Dome this morning and I'm just about to start it - a couple of friends have said this is definitely King edging back towards his best writing so I'm looking forward to it
Think i'll take the plunge and start it this weekend. Hopefully as good as people say - let me know how you get on with it and I'll do likewise - enjoy

I haven't read it but I did read that this is a book he started way back when, so that might explain why it's of a higher standard if he was writing parts of it around the same time as IT and his other biggies.
Yeah heard that it was 25 years in the making. Really looking forward to it and just hope it's as good as some say - must admit thought King had gone off the boil a bit lately so it would be a welcome return to form if it is!!

Has anyone bought his new offering 'Under the dome' yet? Had a look at it @ Waterstones in my lunch hour and it looked like an old style King epic which so may of us grew up with. According to reviews it's up there with The Stand and IT, which really set's a benchmark.
Just wondered if anyone has started it yet as I think 'm going to purchase this very very shortly and put everything else on the backburner
. Let myself drift back into the old Stephen King world that I and countless others enjoy! If anyone has started it whats the verdict so far (realise it's only been out couple of days but if anyone wants to share their thoughts up to now please feel free!) -
Yes I have The Bone Collector on my TBR pile and I am seriously thinking about taking it. Thanks for reminding me Chrissy.

Definately recommend The Bone Collector - in my top 25 reads of all time but then again so are a few of Deavers novels including The Coffin Dancer which is based around aircraft and an air company/airport - Don't let the beginning of the book put you off though
- it's still the safest form of transport! Enjoy the States -

Anyone recommend any end of the world type novels or doomsday scenario books - Have read The Stand, Cell etc. Just finished The First Horseman and about to start on either One by Conrad Williams or Patient Zero by Jonathan Maberry. Any thoughts/recommendations please?

Try PJ Tracy (Dead run, Want to Play etc) - some great characters and thrills
Would also highly recommend Chris Mooney and his heroine character CSI McCormack

Difficult one this - As a fan of the noble art I would obviously have to say Mohammed Ali due to not only his obvious skill but his character and charisma etc. Never saw him in action (way too young
) but of the modern day fighters I've gotta go for Joe Calzaghe - saw him once in Cardiff and his speed and strength was something to behold but he's also a brainy fighter (can't dance to save his life though)!!For what it's worth my top 5 are (based on my sports)

Could go on for hours about some sportsmen and women - I think alot depends on the sport(s) you like and although I'm not a cycling fan I think Lance Armstrong also deserves a mention for his strength and durability
p.s And if you can't tell from the above yes I am a Manchester United fan (and don't come from Manchester)

I think you should start on the Genisis Code by John Case. Purely because I have that on my TBR pile and I would like to know what someone thinks first.

for the welcome. Just finished another book today by John Case - The First Horseman and t.b.h it didn't really do much for me 
so unfortunately Catwoman I think I'm going to give his Genesis Code a miss for time being and start on something else instead so it'll be a month or two before I get around to it I'm afraid. However, don't let me put you off as I've heard good reviews about it and if you do read it soon please let me know how it rated. Thanks and happy reading -

I also think The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is very under-rated. I read this when i saw it lying around on a holiday when i was perhaps 13, my first King novel, which was a great introduction i feel, because it's quite different for King. Then around five years later i picked up The Shining and carried on from there.
Rawr - I must admit i've never heard of this book before - must of passed me by this one. Just had a quick look on Amazon and read few of the reviews there. Sounds very different to 'normal' King and as i am a baseball fan then I'm definately going to give this one a go.

SK is imho the best horror/thriller writer around. He's definately stood the test of time! IT and The Stand are absolute amazing stories and his early stuff like Christine, Cujo, Salems Lot and The Shining were also cracking reads and films. Growing up at that time reading his books and watching the films was brilliant (and more often than not damned scary)
. Haven't read all of the discussion pages here but one particular book which doesn't get mentioned very often is Thinner which is a shame as to me it's also a good read. Did think he started to lose his way a few years ago with novels such as Insomnia, Rose Madder and Liseys Story but though Cell brought him back to his better days!

One that's not so well heard of - Achor Bale (from The Nostradamus Prophecies by Mario Reading) - Just finished reading this book and he's evil, pure evil but in a strange 'old school, gentlemanly' way - I know sounds strange doesn't it!!
