  1. Finished the Alan Sugar book. At first I didn't think I was going to enjoy this, as it seemed to be one long rant about this and that, without any proper structure. Then it settled down and got much better. I suppose that whether you like this book will depend on your opinion of Alan Sugar himself. In our house, The Apprentice is essential viewing, so I was always going to enjoy what he has to say. As you can imagine, he's not afraid to speak his mind! Books read = 20. Next - don't know yet!
  2. That's a relief! It's not just me then!
  3. " I've always been regarded as someone who speaks his mind." - Alan Sugar - The way I see it.
  4. Just hit 500 posts. WooHoo!

well done Ian .. here's to the next 500 :)

  5. I had these for the first time the other day - as sweet potato fries. Very nice with a mayo dip
  6. You can download all the short stories at a site called Project Gutenberg, which has books that are no longer in copyright. They have book in lots of different formats including Kindle. There are lots of them, so you're gonna have to do some cramming! Good luck!
  7. I know I've seen this book at the library myself (The Billy Brown book that is) and have been tempted to get it. Now I know to avoid. There seems to be a whole section of books that thrive in libraries based on the fact that they have eye-catching titles, but are absolutely awfull books. I fell for a similar book titled " Up a tree at night in the park with a hedgehog". Fantastic title I thought - it's bound to be really funny. Wrong! (or Epic Fail, as my son would say) Fortunately, we have this wonderful forum to "out" books like this!
  8. Well, a marathon reading session over the last couple of days saw me finally get to the end of The Old Curiosity Shop. I've read quite a few Dickens in the past, but knew next to nothing about the story of this, bar the famous Oscar Wilde quote about Little Nell. I really enjoyed this book. There's something about the way Dickens writes (and indeed other writers of this era) that really appeals to me. Having said that, it is a very long book , and the last chapter feels a little superfluous (it's fairly obvious how it's all going to end by then). Still, I really enjoyed it so I'm giving it 5 out of 5. It is also the first book read on then Kindle My count seems to have gone awry, but according to the list I've got of what I've read so far (Yes I really am that sad!) that was book 19. Book 20, is a complete change of pace & subject "The Way I See It" - By Alan Sugar
  9. Some brilliant books on this list - one summer ISN'T going to be long enough!
  10. This is one of a number of books on my "failed to finish" list (I think I got less than a quarter of the way through), but you've given such a great review here, Anonymous, that I am convinced to give it another try soon. Thanks!
  11. You're welcome! I had realised you are in Finland, and I have no idea how much that would cost! Ian
  12. Went to see this Saturday with my son. We both loved it! Came out of the cinema with big grins on our faces.
  13. Finished Double or nothing, which was OK, but not great - just a three out of five. That's all the QL books finished Now I go back to The Old Curiosity Shop Books read in 2012 = 17
  14. Some fantastic (and some unusual) books on this list. Forget the kids, I need to read more of these, I've only managed 22 out of the 100!
  15. Hmm. Which of the no-hope only-in-it-for-themselves council election candidates shall I vote for?

The one with the hint of madness to them!

  16. The only book I've read by him is American Assassin. It was OK, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get any more by him
  17. Loved the original, but having seen the advert on the telly, everything about this screams NO! to me!
  18. It's got to be Tom Clancy for me. The straw that broke the camel's back for me being "The Bear And The Dragon". I just got fed up the two-dimensional characters and the awful national stereo-typing that litters his books. Also agree partially with the Mark Haddon comments. I enjoyed "Curious" but found "A Spot Of Bother" very ordinary. Shame.
  19. This morning it just had to be toast with Marmite and a cup of tea.
  20. Managed to finish "Odyssey". It was a bit of a struggle at first, but the last few chapters flew by, and there was a very nice little twist at the end that I should have seen coming but didn't. So overall it's a 3/5 So I'm onto the very last QL book Double or Nothing by C.J.Henderson (book 17)
  21. Finished "Pulitzer" (book 15). I've discovered that I can't read more than one book at a time, so I've had to halt "The Old Curiosity Shop" for the time being. I really want to finish all the QL books before I move onto anything else. I have two more to read So now it's "Odyssey" by Barbara E Walton (book 16) Frankie, once I've finished them all, I'd be happy to box all these books up and post them to you, if you let me know your address.
  22. "Odd Thomas" by Dean Koontz might also fit the bill
  23. You really are going to have to explain that one to me please!
  24. Not drinking alcohol at the moment, and getting fed up of drinking Coke, so it's a "muddy water" (coke & orange juice). Always gets me a funny look off the bar-staff. My last alcoholic drink was a bottled beer my brother got me from a trip down to Dorset. It was called "Piddle in a bottle" and it was very nice!
  25. While not a clairvoyent-theme, I would recommend John Connelly's books. These are crime novels with a supernatural twist. As I say, not exactly what you're looking for, but maybe close enough to interest you? Welcome to the forum!
