  1. Hope your mojo doesn't desert you this year, Chrissy, and you have a smashing year of reading ahead of you.
  2. I'm about 100 pages into Long Lankin so far, and the poem on the first two pages almost made me stop reading, I thought it was so chilling!!! Still, it is aimed at children (maybe YA? not sure) so I'm going to persevere, but there have already been a couple of rather creepy passages, and I'm not going to read it when I'm on my own!
  3. Hope you have a lovely year of reading ahead of you, Janet
  4. Have a great year of reading, Paula!

  7. Always great to see Ali Smith on someone else's TBR list! It's just reminded me you PM'd me a while back, and I read it on my phone and meant to reply to and then completely forgot Sorry about that, I'll get to that soon Hope you enjoy your reading this year
  8. Sorry, I forgot to answer this bit earlier! I have read one other book by him, How To Talk To A Widower, and remember really enjoying it, however, I did start One Last Thing Before I Go a few months ago but I only got about 60 pages in before I put it aside. I might have been in the wrong mood for it, but I haven't felt inclined to pick it up again yet, but I haven't ruled it out yet.
  9. I'm just watching the last episode of the Mapp and Lucia adaptation
  10. Said my lord to my lady, as he mounted his horse: 'Beware of Long Lankin that lives in the moss.' Said my lord to my lady, as he rode away: 'Beware of Long Lankin that lives in the hay.' Long Lankin by Lindsey Barraclough
  11. I have the first cover you posted, frankie. It's actually Kay's book, but she kindly lent it to me. I wasn't the biggest fan of Harold Fry, I though it was okay, but predictable, but I'm interested to see how I fare with Perfect. I'll bump it up the TBR list, just for you!
  12. Thank you all! Didn't even open a book or pick up my kindle yesterday, but think I'll start another of my Christmas books today. Probable candidate is Long Larkin by Lindsey Barraclough - a book my OH bought me, and one I'm actually a bit dubious about as it sounds and looks quite scary, and not my usual cup of tea at all.
  13. A Breath of French Air by H. E. Bates Synopsis (from amazon.co.uk): And so at the end of a rainy English August the Larkins – all ten of them, including little Oscar, the family’s new addition – bundle into the old Rolls and cross the Channel to escape the hostile elements. But far from being the balmy, sunny and perfick spot Ma Larkin hoped for, France proves less than welcoming to an eccentric English family. The tea’s weak, the furniture breakable and the hotel manager is almost as hostile as the wind and the rain they’ve brought with them! And when the manager learns that Ma and Pop are unmarried yet sharing a room under his roof, the trouble really begins … Review: After enjoying The Darling Buds of May yesterday, I couldn't resist buying the sequel today. The Larkins decamp to Brittany for a holiday, and find their hotel rather dilapidated, the food disappointing, the bar almost non-existent and even the weather letting them down. Gradually, the fortunes of the holiday turn around, new friends are made, old friends are met, and everyone has a lovely time. Again, not much happens, but the gentle affection for the family and the period made me nostalgic for a time before I was born! Lovely escapism for my first book of the year.
  14. I watched Galaxy Quest again this afternoon - I'd forgotten just how good it is.
