  1. I see lots of people here putting THE STAND by Stephen King up as a favorite horror. With this in mind, I will recommend SWAN SONG by Robert R. Mccammon. Seriously, this is my absolute favorite book of all time. I know thats a hard thing to say, but this is the one that began my life of reading. It's not straight up horror, but it's more like the Stand. An end of the world book with horror themes. An amazingly vivid cast of characters and their stories get woven together perfectly.

Mccammon started out as more of a traditional horror writer with BAAL and They Thirst. But his later stuff like Gone South and Boys Life were just some of the best reading I could ever suggest to someone.

  2. Damn, someone already beat me to World War Z.

I recommend it - it's a great zombie read (wish someone would do it justice in the cinema - would be better than the Day of the Dead remake!)

Actually I just read online somewhere that they ARE doing WORLD WAR Z as a movie. Supposedly the script is in the works now, being written by J. Michael Strazcynski(probably butchered that spelling).

But yes, this is probably the best and most serious Zombie book ever. It shows how just about every different culture on earth would react and be affected by it. I would totally make this one your pick.

  3. My First post!

I actually loved this story. I had my doubts before I read it because of how old it is, didn't think it would hold up, but it does. It's leaps and bounds better than any of the incarnations of movies they have done.

The intensity at some points was just surprising.

Matheson paints an amazing picture here. If you haven't read it, you should!
