  1. I often buy a book following a recommendation from a friend with similar reading tastes or after reading thoughts and reviews here on BCF,  I also read the blurb online and download if i like the sound of it. I do buy books just because I like a certain author or series of books as well.

Before I had a kindle I visited book shops a lot more and was more likely to impulse buy because I liked the cover.

  2. Hiya, I read this with my book group. I was disappointed and think it's overrated. There are better books out there. I didn't care about the main characters the only one I liked was his sister.

I agree with you! I didn't like the two main characters at all and really didn't care what happened to either of them, though I did like Go's character . I thought the ending was a major let down too.

  3. I read,  thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend!   Khaled Hosseini ~ And The Mountains Echoed

Then I returned to and finished reading Gone Girl ~Gillian Flynn, it did improve for me but I was quite disappointed with it for various reasons.

I have now down loaded Philippa Gregory ~ The White Queen and The Red Queen

and a couple of thrillers that were on offer from Amazon.

Now to decide what to read next    :readingtwo:

  4. Morning all, just popping in to say hello as it's been a while! I've just been too busy and stressed to do any real reading.

Hope you're all doing well :friends3:

Hello Noll, hope you're feeling a bit better/less stressed now, take care and 'see' you around

  5. It took me a little while to get into it. I really struggled with Amy's tone in her diary entries, but soon enough it got better.....

I tried sticking with Gone Girl for a bit longer but could feel my mojo slipping away! :irked:  so I put it back on the shelf and will go back to it another time :blush2:

I am now three quarters of the way through  And The Mountains Echoed ~ Khaled Hosseini such a good story and I love the way he writes.

  6. I finished The Bones of Avalon ~ Phil Rickman, I really enjoyed it and will definately be looking out for a sequel.

Today I started Gone Girl ~ Gillian Flynn I haven't read much but I'm struggling all ready! so I think I will put it to one side and try again at a later date, I think it's my mood and not the book that's the problem  :blush2: so I might read some Sherlock Holmes instead.

  7.

The third Dexter book was a rather serious disappointment, but as a long-time fan of the books, I urge you: please don't let this stop you from reading the fourth novel! It's a great improvement, it's probably as good as book 1 and 2  And just wait til you get to book five, it's my absolute favorite in the series!!! :smile2:

:I-Agree:  totally with Frankie,  you won't be disappointed with the next 2!

  8. Finished And the Mountains Echoed.  Loved it, just as good as his other two.  The man really writes the most beautiful stories.

Glad you enjoyed it and think it's as good as the others, I just downloaded it and look forward to reading it

That's a good book, and so's the sequel

I started The Bones of Avalon today and I'm enjoying it so far    :readingtwo:

I also had an email saying that  Police (The new Harry Hole story) by Jo Nesbo is out in September! I'm really looking forward to reading it.

  9. I've treated myself to a kindle paperwhite and I am loving it   so I have downloaded a few books (cause it had to be done even though it's a replacement and I've got plenty to read without buying more!)

I have just finished A Feast For Crows - George R.R. Martin, it took me a while to get into it but once I did I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have also downloaded:

    A Dance With Dragons (parts 1 & 2)  George R.R. Martin

And The Mountains Echoed - Khaled Hosseini

The Bones of Avalon - Phil Rickman, I've enjoyed the Merrily watkins series by him so look forward to this one.

There are more books but too many to list, enough to keep me going for a while anyway!

I've also got Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn, on the book shelf ready.

  10. Since I was last here I have read;

Phantom - Jo Nesbo.  I thought it was excellent!

Thursdays in the Park - Hilary Boyd. Enjoyable, feel good, quick read.

Marley and Me  - John Grogan. I absolutely loved it, most of the book I was laughing out loud it was so funny,  I want a dog like Marley  :D

The Greenhouse - Audur Ava Olafsdottir, another easy read, I enjoyed it.

  11. Unfortunately, PAM is currently available only with the pserver access method, and the authentication tokens are transmitted with only trivial encryption

Unfortunately, Pam's logging days were over and Mike was now the laughing stock of the birding world, so they needed new careers :o

(unfortunately PAM is very unhelpful for debugging). :giggle:

  12. For a spoiler, you can either type the text you want in tags, highlight it and then click on the blue and green stripy square in the tool bar at the top left-hand side of the reply box and select spoiler from the drop-down box, or, if you can't remember that, merely type [ spoiler] at the beginning of the text you want to hide and [/ spoiler] at the end, but without the space before the word spoiler. Hope that helps. :)

Thank you Janet It does help, my mind was totally blank! (nothing new lately!!) ;)

I'm so happy you enjoyed the novel :D Everybody needs a friend like Sonya :giggle2: Good luck with your next read, I hope it'll keep your mojo happy :smile2:

(If you need help with spoilers, first select the text you want in spoilers. The for the spoiler: it's the third icon from the left, right before the 'font' thing. Click on it, and you'll get a list of different functions and somewhere there is 'spoiler', click on that and that should do it :))

Edit: Hehehe! When I was reading through pipread's post, I noticed that Janet's reading this thread, too, and I just had this feeling she'd be helping pipread with the spoiler tags and I'd be too late :D

Thanks for the help Frankie! I'm certain Jo Nesbo will continue to keep the mojo happy and content.

  13. I've finished my first book of the year :D my first book for about 4 months actually! I'm so happy and relieved. It's

The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared - Jonas Jonasson. Such a good read full of surprises!

Frankie I love Sonya! (I was going to give my favourite example but can't do spoilers :blush2: ) so I'm thinking of it instead. :giggle: It is hard to top that you're so right.

My next read will be Phantom - Jo Nesbo. I'm so looking forward to it

  14. Congratulations!! :flowers2:

    Thank you!

Ah yes, Christmas and the time before... No matter how much we might love it, it is a pretty stressful time!

As it just so happens, I have read the 100yo. Man, and I have to say it was really funny :D I struggled with some of the parts where Allan's background was told, I kept getting confused with all the political characters and such, but I loved the parts of the story where the actual story was moving along. A good read! :)

I have been a bit confused at times as well and had to go back to check names and details, but on the whole I've really enjoyed it, it's certainly full of surprises!

  15. I too have a lot of books on mount TBR, many I've bought myself, I do enjoy browsing book shops and charity shops to see what jumps out at me :blush2: but quite a few have been given to me. I am inclined to buy books that have been given good reviews on the forum if they appeal to me and I do like it when friends find a book on my shelf that they fancy reading and want to borrow, it helps to ease my guilt of having so many unread books waiting while I still buy new ones  I find that the books I download to my kindle I don't feel so guilty about, probably because they're out of sight! :D

I do feel that I should buy less and use the library a bit more though.

  16. Thank you frankie :D I think getting back to normal after a stressfull lead up to christmas did the trick. I've nearly finished

The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared

have you read it? It's got just about everything in it you could want, including quirky humour - definately worth a read.

  17. I so nearly bought Phantom on my way home last night. It was half price in Smiths. For some reason I resisted, I think because I want to reduce my TBR pile a bit first

    :o That's real will power!

I find that having a kindle I can ignore the length of my TBR pile, cause it's not taking up shelf space :D

  18. I read several Jo Nesbo books in a row last year when I was stressed and couldn't settle to reading anything else at all. They worked a treat! :)

They are great reads aren't they, The Snowman has definately been my favourite but I've enjoyed all of them - I love Harry Hole, what a character.

  19. Oh man, poor pipread! Maybe you've only picked up the wrong books, and something else will come along soon and will get you hooked in an instant? :empathy:

Hope your mojo heads back soon. :)

Oh noes!! Do you have a favorite book that you can re-read? I find that tends to help when my mojo takes a dip.

Thanks for the help and sympathy  I've tried coaxing the missing mojo back but that hasn't worked so now I'm trying to be hard! I'm making myself pick up my kindle and read at least two chapters a day of my last downloaded book - The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of The Window.......a book I think I should enjoy, my reward if I finish it will be to download Phantom - Jo Nesbo. If that doesnt work nothing will :blush2:

  20. My reading mojo did a runner a few weeks ago and there's still no sign of it! :help: I thought once the Christmas rush was over maybe things would improve but i was wrong. I've started a few books but nothing's bringing it back - I guess it's a case of sitting back and waiting for it to put in an appearance. Hope it comes back soon, I miss it.

  21. I finished The Leopard - Jo Nesbo, not quite as good as The snowman for me but not far off i think

I am now reading Restless - William Boyd, really enjoying his writing style, it's the first book of his that I've read.

Also thanks to Michelle :thanx: I've downloaded 3 books to my kindle:

    Ash - James Herbert (20p!)

    Dead Man's grip - Peter James (20p!)

and The Forgotten Garden - Kate Morton (69p!)

Amazing bargains, :D I'll probably go back for another look through later!
