  1. I watched the David Lean film along time ago and was fascinated by it, I've also read the book in my teens but I think I need to read it again. I can't quite make my mind up about the role of Miss Havisham, I thought she was a bit more frightening in the original film. She doesn't appear that way in the TV version. I liked Ray Winstone as Magwitch, I thought he was well cast. Overall I've really enjoyed it, I think they captured the mood of the book quite well.

  2. Hi Dove, you might enjoy Mist Over Pendle which has recently been re-published. Great novel of witchcraft. I can't remember who wrote Witchfinder General, I will have a look around and see if I can find out. Also, talking of witchcraft, there are two good books out at the moment: The Heretic's Daughter and The Lost Book of Salem and they have been reviewed on here.

Thanks for those recommendations, I'll check those out. I've just finished The Novel in the Viola and thoroughly enjoyed it so I need a new read.

  3. Thanks for the recommendations. I've not read Rebecca, I keep meaning to expand some of the classics. I have read and enjoyed Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. I'll try Natasha Solomons novel too, I've not come across that before.

I'm not sure what my favourite style is. I do like history and in particular the Tudor period so have exhausted all the Philippa Gregory ones of that period, I have also enjoyed books relating to witchcraft - Hiding from the Light, Barbara Erskine, and a book about The Witchfinder General but I can't remember the author. I've enjoyed all the Kate Morton novel, I like the to and fro between present day and the past.

I suppose I've got lots of Barbara Erskine to get through as I've only read about three. For easy reading I do enjoy Maeve Binchy.

  4. I registered here quite a while ago but have only just posted my 1st reply!

I'm a 30 something mum of two. I love reading but haven't had the time to read much over recent years but I hope to rectify that. I did read quite a few book in September last year when I had a lengthy stay in hospital visiting due my son who was in the special care baby unit (he's fine now, but was in for just over a month). I read Philippa Gregory - The Other Queen, Jodi Picoult's The Pact and My Sister's Keeper, and Kate Morton's The Forgotten Garden.

I don't really have a genre, I'll try most things but Philippa Gregory (Tudor/Plantagenet series) are a favourite. I do tend to read mainly female authors, I'm not sure why. I did try a few of the classics, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights which I enjoyed too.

I love forward to reading the posts and book recommendations on this forum.

  5. I finished The White Queen last week and really enjoyed it. I do love Philippa Gregory and the Tudor history anyway but my knowledge of the War of the Roses was sketchy. I think this has given me the incentive to do a bit more background reading into Richard III, the book certainly offers a different opinion on him.
