  1. His Dark Materials trilogy.
  2. I couldn't believe Raef went either (Sorry I'm late! I watched it on iPlayer yesterday to catch up...) I actually thought Michael would go but he keeps begging and getting away with it. I think Michael, Alex and Helene should all go really. But my mother read in the newspaper that ( Hmmm.
  3. My boyfriend's reading Day of the Triffids currently and he says he's very impressed with it! Unfortunately, haven't read it myself. However, I did read/do have one of his other books: Chocky. My school were giving away their old copies of it so I managed to get one and I remember reading it and really liking it (although this was a few years ago now)...
  4. Aren't most Dr Who episodes bordering on silly anyway? =P Anyhow, I thought the episode was alright - I liked the Whodunnit? style!
  5. On another forum I frequent we just have one thread called The Birthday Thread, the first post of which lists everyone's birthdays. And then people post in it to wish whoever's birthday might come along It's neat and tidy and reminds people of others' birthdays when they're checking threads. It's always nice for people to get birthday wishes in their profile messages though
  6. Looks like I'm a young'un - 19.
  7. Thank you :) Just trying to find my away around for now!

  8. I have a feeling lots of this has been covered in my introductory thread but here goes: Birthday: 21st January '89 Age: 19 Starsign: Aquarius Single/Married/Other? I have a boyfriend. He's Scottish. Children? Goodness no. Not yet. Where do you live? I live in Ilford, a place with an identity crisis. It's in East London but the address says Essex. However, currently for the majority of the year I live in Central Manchester, what with university being there. I also spend time in Edinburgh, where my boyfriend lives. Do you work? I'm a student, and a lazy one at that. In the upcoming holidays I'll be working in an architecture firm. Favourite author? This question is far too hard. Favourite book(s)? Rebecca, His Dark Materials, Harry Potter, You Don't Know Me, Alice In Wonderland, The Phantom Tollbooth...etc. Quite a long list. How did you get here? By avoiding work and Googling.
  9. There are a few mums about. I was wondering what sort of average age this forum has.... I'd imagine a range - but there's got to be somewhere in the middle! I frequent another forum with a wide range of people but the average age is about 22. Also what's the male/female ratio? Lots of females about, as far as I can tell... I read Coram Boy when my mother suggested it to me as it was up for...some prize, I forget which but I think it won. And I saw the National Theatre play for my 17th birthday .
  10. Raef grew on me as well - I've been watching The Apprentice on iPlayer due to my lack of a television - even though I thoroughly disliked him at first. I've always wondered when Sir Alan sends off the winning team saying he's thrown a banquet or yacht spa chocolate making session for them, is it really him paying for it? Or is it the BBC? If it is the BBC I'd like them to acknowledge that it is in fact our taxpayers who put on these delightful things for them and not Sir Alan. Does anybody have the answers? I do wish he'd fire a few more people simultaneously, makes the programme get a wiggle on .
  11. Thanks. I use this screen-name for age-old sake. It was created when I was about seven, hence the grievous changing of 'ks' to 'x'. Anyhow, it's remained with me although people on the internet now know me as Jaya - which is my real name.
  12. I'm probably the biggest reader in my house, but my mother and sister enjoy reading too. Unfortunately, in recent years, my sister has swapped reading for partying and drinking - but she does still read when she can and enjoys doing English Literature. My mother is a school librarian, meaning her job revolves around reading children's books...so our house is full of them (much to our delight). My dad prefers non-fiction, and doesn't read very much. The odd biography, auto-biography, or philosophical commentary. Unfortunately I have no pets to consult on my choice of reading material.
  13. Ah, it doesn't work. Perhaps I need 10 posts before I can use it...?
  14. Well, everyone seems nice and friendly but...why does everyone's mother like Freecell? I like several plays, and try and see plays whenever I can. Plays I've seen include Macbeth, Waiting For Godot, Hypochondriac, Woman In Black, Metamorphosis, His Dark Materials, Coram Boy, 'Tis Pity She's A 'lady of the night', Nathan the Wise*...and several others! I tend to like most I go to see to varying degrees - I just really like the theatre and find myself incredibly lucky to be in London, where there's so much to see. When it's not possible (or affordable ) to see a play, I'd have to settle for reading it. So plays I like but have not seen are mainly ones I've studied in school: Translations, An Inspector Calls, etc. I also like what plays I know of Shakespeare. I enjoyed most of the things I studied at school. Despite, a lot of people finding literature ruined by dissecting it, I didn't mind so much - although I only really started getting into it at A-Level (I did my A-Level in English Literature last year). I like poetry as well! I won't bore you by starting another list - but I do write my own poetry (not seriously) more like nonsense-on-the-spot poetry, mainly for amusement's sake. What are your favourite books? And...does this forum have a functioning IRC channel? *...do musicals count? I think I prefer plays that aren't musicals... Chicago, We Will Rock You, Bombay Dreams, my list goes on for quite a while so I'd best stop.
  15. I've only ever written in books for study-purposes (that includes fiction books) but I do remember realising one day that I could write in my own books - not that I ever have after that anyway. I prefer to keep my books in good condition, but a lot of the ones I own are hand-me-downs from family (cousins, mother, etc.) and have a tatty-but-loved look and feel to them. I don't mind them this way. I just try as much as possible to avoid dropping any of my books in puddles or accidentally setting them on fire, whether they're old or new.
  16. Good morning! As I procrastinated away I found myself thinking I should find a new book-based forum to join...and voila, here I am, thanks to Google. So, an introduction: my name is Jaya, I am 19 and I am from London, England - although I'm currently in Manchester at university, coming up to the end of my first year. I like reading, wasting my time on IRC, and Freecell (which is like Solitaire, but involves skill). I'm studying architecture, so I suppose I'll have to say I like that too. I like to read...most things, but I'm still attached to young adult/children's fiction because it is undeniably great; I particularly like fantasy. My favourite books include His Dark Materials, Alice in Wonderland, The Phantom Tollbooth, Rebecca, You Don't Know Me, certain Discworld novels, and the obligatory Harry Potter. I am currently just finishing The Amulet of Samarkand, by Jonathon Stround. I also have a fondness of plays (does this count here?). Feel free to..um...ask me anything, not really sure what else to put in an introductory post. Here is a picture of one of my much loved (and clearly overstuffed) bookcases - although the picture's a little old, it still looks the same, possibly weighted down with a few more books these days.
