Don't get me started on the badness that was Chocolat. That movie should not have had that title at all and after reading then watching the movie I think I made me Mum deaf with my ranting .
The thing that pissed me off the most...
In the film Johnny Depp ends up with the lead character but in the book he has a love affair with the older woman who stood up to the thug of a husband. Probably wouldn't have bothered me if it was someone other than Lena Olin. She is one of my major girl crushes and the chemistry between her and Depp is awesome. Why change that?
My other rage would have to be Flowers in the Attic. The book was disturbingly brilliant but the film was... bad .

I was looking forward to reading this book for so long but now, having just finished it today I was totally gutted. There were a few things I liked but most sucked.
The Good
The rift between the parent's was quite realistic and I was
glad that they ended up back together. I was also glad that the Mom didn't fall in love with the detective
because that is what always happens. I adored the Gran and I think my favourite characters were Samuel & Hal. By the looks of it
Hal is not in the movie and that is a shame since he became a vital part in Buck's life and became part of the family.
My favourite part was the
night of the college graduation, where Sam & Lindsey found that house and then ran home in the rain in excitement. It was that glimmer of happiness and hope for them that
made me smile.
The Bad
I actually felt no sympathy for Susie
because she was stupid for trusting him in the first place. I really hated the moment Ruth and Susie switched places because it completely took away the slight realism of the story. What irked me the most about that is that Ray had sex with Ruth because he knew it was Susie. To me it almost seemed like rape but
I may be the only one who felt that.
I hated the ending because
there was no real closure. It just ended. After so many chapters with the mentioning the sinkhole I was convinced that she was going to be found but nope,
not a chance.

I managed to get the book from the college library and finished reading about 2 days ago. Managed to read about a quarter of the book while in my Study Skills lesson (I got bored after finishing my exams).
I found it hard to get into the book at first but I got to a certain point where I just got completely engrossed. I loved the way it was written through the eyes of a young girl but my favourite part was that there were 2 plots in the book, even though only 1 is advertised. I loved the whole Boo Radley connection and almost cried when Scout realized who had helped her and Jem!
I also had the pleasure of watching the 1962 movie version. They completely missed the point of the book, taking away the young girls POV and rushing through everything. It's a shame.
I will elaborate by answering some of those questions from the first post tomorrow. But I will say that it was a pleasure to read the book and I am glad it was picked for this month.

I recently finished reading The Color Purple by Alice Walker. I've only just got round to writing a little about it.
I struggled to read this book. I know that this book is supposed to be quite an influential piece of writing but by the end of it I felt nothing.I found the pace of the book quite hodge podge and the language was something I just could not get on with.
I would like to see others opinions on this book.

To me there are 4 local libraries.
Village Library - This used to be an amazing place to sit and read in but in the last few years less books are on offer and more computers are taking up the space. Stupid place:motz:.
Stratford Library - This is a lot nicer then the village library but seems to be limited on Fiction books. They deal with a lot more educational books. I use this library the most.
Stratford College Library - I go to this one if I want to be around others. It's a packed library and not quiet at all but nice enough.
Leamington Library - I go to this library whenever I am in the town. You have a massive library, study area, DVD's and a museum, with a restraunt. I love it! If you are ever in Leamington, head to the library mmmkay!

I saw it! For the first time I saw the graphic novel of The Crow... and it was beautiful. It was like finding the Holy Grail for this fan.
Yet I could not buy the book because my money is going towards new glasses (which I need for reading so not all bad).
But that book will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.
And I will squee and bask in the beauty of The Crow here, in hope that others will squee with me.

Books will never die! It upsets me that more and more people are turning their backs on books... but this list is completely wrong. Especially the bookshops/library being uncool. Every bookshop and library I go to seems to be packed with teenagers.
Perhaps English in schools should make students read books and review them. Maybe the age of the hoodie/chav will die and bring us the intelligent nation .

I would just like to explain something first. I recently started College and one of the core subjects is Study Skills. For module 2 we have been asked to write an 800-word review on a book of our choice, which is a balance of basic plot and personal opinion. Doing this task has given me a thirst for reading and reviewing.
I tell you this because I plan on writing 400-word reviews for each book I read, just to help me incase I decide to take up English Literature in September. The book I have reviewed for class hasn’t been handed in yet so I won’t post it till it is marked. Just in case I get in to trouble

I haven't seen Lost since Season 2 (and then only half of it). I lost interest but now I really would like to see the show again.
I think I'll wait till May and ask for the first 3 seasons on DVD for my birthday.
Is it still as good as Season 1?

I was personally hoping for some Jack/Ianto/Spike lovin'. But that is the hardcore Ianto/Jack fangirl in me:mrgreen:.

I've always been fascinated by comics & graphic novels, but been too embarrassed to buy any. I bought three comics based on Elektra a couple of years ago because I loved the artwork so much.
I would like to get my hands on the graphic novel of The Crow because I've had a passion for that for about 3 years. There is something so beautiful about that story.
I'm trying to wait for Buffy Season Eight to be brought out in volume books, but it's so bloody tempting to buy. I am also planning on getting a copy of the new Heroes graphic novel because I love the artwork.
I love words and I love beautiful artwork!

I feel that the horror genre is like an old tree. It started as one tree and began to shoot off branches of new ideas for the genre. There are so many different 'horror' topics out there that it is hard to keep track.
You have:
Ghouls, ghosts and other supernatural spooks
Unnatural & disturbing
Real life disturbing
Slasher horror
And many others.

Before I list my favourites I just have to make something clear. I am one of those strange people who like to see subtext because it makes shows interesting. Don't hate me for it.
Heroes - My new favourite show. Am catching this on BBC2 and am completely hooked. Plus I'm a secret Petrellicest admirer:lurker:. Please say I am not alone.
Supernatural - Though not on at the moment, I'm a huge fan of this show and am dying to see Season 3.
The L Word - They don't show this on any of the channels I have so I've been watching on DVD. Am up to Season 3 and yeah, this season cemented my love.
Smallville - Am near the end of Season 6 and wow, what a dark season. I hate the Lex/Clark hate (Clex fan!) but I love the twisted relations between Martha, Lionel & Clark. Plus The Green Arrow rocked!
Home & Away - I'm a fan with no shame! I've written fic about this soap and will continue to.

I have a problem. I have a hardback book that I would like to sell soon and it is in excellent condition. I put the ISBN number in to Green Metropolis and it came up with the same book but a different cover and more pages.
Can I still sell?
-
I've tried reading Interview with the Vampire twice and both times I just could not get into it. I started off enjoying it but then became bored quite fast.
I am going to try one more time at reading it.
-
Yep, live in the Warwickshire county but I am actually closer to another great place that is known by book fans. I am a 20 minute bus ride away from Stratford-Upon-Avon, home of The Shakespeare:mrgreen:

I just noticed that they sell textbooks as well. This will help me so much if I get accepted into college next year . I've already found books that I want to buy but can't afford for a few days.
-
I may have to consider selling some books on that site. It is nice to find a website where you don't have to worry about being charged to list.
I have a load of Buffy books somewhere. You think they will be popular?
-
I'll try any kind of tea but my favourite is Spearmint tea. Oh and normal tea.

I prefer used books because I'm not afraid of reading them. With brand new books, you turn the pages carefully and hope the spine doesn't start to crack. With old books, the pages are easy to turn and feel so much nicer.
Plus it makes me wonder about the person who had it before me:lol:.

Thank you for making me feel so welcome straight away. I think I'm going to like it here. Here's to hoping my sister moves out soon and I get more bedroom space, so I have somewhere to put my books .
Hello, and welcome! I also love Stephen King. My favorite of his is The Stand. Which one do you like? I think that books are therapeutic for a lot of people, myself included. This forum is the perfect place for you, I think! I'm glad you decided to join! :mrgreen:My favourite Stephen King book has to be The Green Mile. I watched the movie first but I wanted to read the book. It was refreshing to see that the movie almost matched the book. Definitely one I can re-read!
Hello and to the forum, Jess! If it's new ideas for books to read you're after, you've certainly come to the right place! You might like to join in one of our reading circles (check out the Reading Circle section HERE), and as you're a Stephen King fan, you might like to leave your comments on the two books we've read by him - The Stand and The Shining. We're also currently voting on which book to read in November HERE.I hope you'll enjoy it here.
I had a look at the Reading Circle and the November choices all look good. I have to admit that I'm not good at expressing my thoughts on a book, but I'm hoping to do an English Lit course next year so I think this forum will help me with that.

My favourite authors are Virginia Andrews & Stephen King.

Hey.
My name is Jess and I'm 21. I joined this forum because it is friendly and I love books... obviously . I used to read a lot of books through my teen years, mainly because I had nothing else to do and it helped me escape problems in my life.
When life got busy, I stopped reading. At the beginning of this year I began to read again because I wanted to escape life. I had a breakdown and I guess reading helped me through the dark period.
Now I am hoping to find some new books to throw myself in to and I think this forum will give me what I need.

I'm so sorry about that. I was going to put the spoiler tags in after writing my post and then forgot. I feel so ashamed:blush:.
