Could you help me to find the title of a book and its author? It's a detective or mystery novel (1940s or 1950s); the main character was a taxi driver in a big city (probably New York or Chicago). A beautiful woman inadvertently left her wallet in the taxi, probably it dropped when she was going to pay. Since there were some documents inside the wallet (among them a driver's license), the taxi driver tried to locate her by going to the address indicated on the license, but she wasn't there and the building was completely burnt out. The taxi driver continued his investigation, going into a lot of trouble. The story featured gangsters, bookies, blackmailers, one or more femme fatales in a cabaret, etc. Does it ring a bell?
