Not sure when it was written but it's set around the 1930s. It's about a spy or secret agent who's on the run, told from his point of view I think.
I can't remember much about it, but there's a scene where he's hiding in an old abandoned building in the woods, I think, and he uses dead fish to cover his scent, so the dogs can't track him.
I think he ends up getting on a ship.
There might be another, younger guy who does near the beginning?
I think it's called The 'something' Man. Invisible, single, hidden...
