  1. The Dancing Barber by AC Michael (historical fiction about Russia/Ukraine). Some great reviews and buzz about this book on onlinebookclub. I just downloaded it and it's free today

Another historic fiction/coming of age is my 2016 favorite London for Immigrant suckers; So long Yugoslavia (£0.99)

If you fancy a bit of romance, The Birds and bees by Milly Johnson (£0.99)

  2. The January Kindle monthly deals start today, and I spotted Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks is on sale for only £1.49.  Definitely one of the best books I read last year, and on the English Counties list if you're interested in taking part in the challenge and haven't read it yet. :)

I just finished Years of Wonders and enjoyed the first 87% of the book.

  3. My 5/5 are:

    - Millennium trilogy, Stieg Larsson (The girl with the Dragon Tattoo, being my favorite of three)

-London for Immigrant suckers, Kolya S. (Unexpected hidden gem)

    - Sudden death, Alvar Enrique  ( Maybe not 5/5 but I liked it)

Slightly disappointed by "The Wangs vs The World" (Expected more)

  4. After watching The Bridge, I became interested in Scandinavian movies and literature and the first recommendation was "A Death in the family". I's on offer on Amazon £4.99 from £8.99. It's very well written but I found many boring moments. Some call it a masterpiece.

The one I unexpectedly enjoy reading (not brilliantly written but no boring moments) is "London for Immigrant suckers" and it's free on Amazon kindle deals

After that, I wanted to carry on with a similar subject ( recommended to me by a friend)  and started reading " A short History of Tractors in Ukranian". I'm not so sure if I like it but it's entertaining. It's down to £3.99 from £8.99 on Amazon kindle.

  5. I just read "London for immigrant suckers" and I'm not sure if it can improve your intellectual level, but it certainly tick some of your boxes.

Politics - yes, ( warning - it can destroy lives if managed by charlatans)

Religion - yes  ( the drug of the nation)

Economics - yes ( housing market)

History - yes, although you were not specific whose history. This book briefly examines the history of Yugoslavia, but amazingly, through the Prism of football.

  6. I had no idea Marquez had also written Love in the Time of Cholera - I feel a bit silly now. That's another book that has been on my TBR pile for quite a while now.

Do you guys think it's worth giving a go? As much as I enjoyed One Hundred Years of Solitude, it's not the type of book I normally read, nor do I think it's the sort of book I'd read again. So I'm not sure how I'd feel reading another of Marquez's books - although I don't know how different each of his works are from one another.

If you are hopeless romantic - give it a go. Otherwise, well 100 yos is special, while love itoc...there is still some charm about it but...

  7. Yeah, maybe I was asking too much, and there a handful of other books are excellent, especially Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and Of Love and Other Demons.

I remember reading Love in the time of Cholera and didn't like the plot so I was trying to persuade myself that book has to be good because it's Marquez...I'm just finishing the book where Marquez was mentioned on several occasions and one of the characters using a nickname of Colonel Aureliano Buendia from 100 years of Solitude

  8. I liked it a lot, but I don't think it's a book for everyone. If the synopsis and type of book appeals to you though, I'd recommend it.

I saw the romantic and emotionally charged movie trailer and it looked potentially hart breaking story so I guess the book can't be any easier on emotions... I'll probably stay away.

  9.

I think I'd like to remember some poems that have stuck with me just for my own pleasure of mind. There are poems that have really resonated with me at certain points in my life, and it'd be nice to have those in the back of my mind...

Feel the same but I can only memorize people and conversations...which is not that bad. For anything else, there is always internet to remind you.
