  1. That looks interesting Smalldog - this is such a great site to find new author and genres  .  (Though I'm from the UK, I now live in Austria - where this morning we were experiencing very British rainy weather - now turned to heavy snow, which at least looks pretty.)

I have just started a book by Andrea Levy (author of Small Island) called "Fruit of the Lemon" which is partly set in Jamaica so I'm hoping to find some sunshine in it later on! Talking of Lemons; I heard someone recently mention "Driving Over Lemons" by Chris Stuart which I read years ago and tells of the author's life in on a farm in Andalusia.

Or how about Joanne Harris and "Peaches for Monsieur Le Cure" set in France or Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche's "Half of a Yellow Sun" set in Nigeria.

  2. I haven't but I'm glad you drew my attention to it. I'm a  bit obsessed with Virginia and Vanessa and the while Bloomsbury thing and recently finished Angelica Bell's biography Deceived with Kindness after watching the TV series Living in Squares so I will look for this one.

We come to the UK every year from Oz and always stay at the Tavistock in London and Virginia's house is just round the corner and there is a bust of her in the square across from the hotel.  I find that era endlessly fascinating.

I thought you would be interested to hear about this one Jean!

  3. Did anyone watch War and Peace last night?  I've recorded it but not sure whether I really want to watch it!  Wondered if anyone else had seen it and what they thought (although no spoilers please, as I haven't read the book either :D)

Yes we've started watching it though I didn't think I would enjoy it as I had no real idea what the book is about. However, I am enjoying it; acting is good and scenery stunning too!

  4. Athena, I've not read The Book Boy by Joanna Trollope. Is it a recent one of hers?

My favourite Maeve Binchy novel was "Circle of Friends" but I must admit wasn't so keen on her later novels.

  5. Hello and thank-you for all your warm welcomes!

I started off reading books by Rosamund Pilcher, Maeve Binchy, Joanna Trollope but now read novels by a wide range of authors and especially enjoy those set in different countries which enables me to learn more about their cultures and way of life. A few of those authors include Adriana Trigiani (loved her Big Stone Gap series) Khaled Hosseini (The Kite Runner), Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche.

I also enjoy JoJo Moyes, Kate Atkinson, Joanne Harris and Elizabeth Buchan. I keep a little notebook of authors and their books I've read, just to remind me!

Charliepud, the main reason we moved to Suffolk, (nr Bury St Edmund's) was to be nearer to our eldest son and wife who gave us our first grandson last July. They live in Essex so it's a journey we can do there and back in one day. We moved up to North Staffordshire 33 years ago from the south due to a work move but I hankered to get back down south and at long last here we are, actually living in the county of my ancestors!

  6. Hello, I'm new to this site having belonged to another Book Group on a site that is closing down. I am 68 and have loved reading since a child though had to have a break whilst being a mum to four sons in the 1970s and 1980s. We have recently moved from North Staffordshire to Suffolk and loving it so far. Looking forward to exploring the site when I have time ....
