I tutor reading, and because of that I've read a quite a large amount of picture books with my student. It has got me thinking about how many beautiful, quality children's books there are out there. What are some of your favorite picture books? Either from when you where young or that you've come across lately. With a little bit of thought, some of my favorites are: The Little House - Virginia Lee Burton Chicka Chicka Boom Boom - Bill Martin Jr Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs - Judi Barrett Very Last First Time - Jan Andrews The Giving Tree - Shel Silverstein Oh, The Places You'll Go - Dr. Seuss Where the Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak Make Way For Ducklings - Robert McCloskey Blueberries for Sal - Robert McCloskey The Monster at the End of This Book - Jon Stone

Perhaps you guys can give me some pointers. I'm gonna have my first little one in a few month, and I want to start early with a little library. Can't get them hooked too early. Since the little one is supposed to be brought up bilingual, I want to include some English picture book classics too. But I can barely think of any. Dr. Seuss obviously, and the very hungry caterpillar, but that's about all I know. So what would you consider must-haves? Which do you remember fondly from your childhood?

Do you think books turned into movies do it justice? I think it's a very good question. After spending much time thinking about this question I have come to the conclusion that I prefer to read the book and that I don't think turning them into movies do the book any justice. For example: I read the Twilight books a few years ago before the movies and I enjoyed it very much and had a image in my head of what the character were like and looked. Then the movie came out and they left so much out. I mean I still liked the Twilight movies, I must admit I did enjoy them all. But when I look at the book now I don't see my original thoughts anymore. It's all changed. Or how about the classic Journey to the center of the earth? I think they shredded it to bits. Yes the movie in general was entertaining, it just wasn't anywhere near the book. ( I thought) If we go a bit younger again how about Diary of a wimpy kid? any thoughts on this one? Tell me what your kids thought, would like to get a younger opinion. Please tell me you thoughts, what do you think? Do you have any other books to movie examples? Robin
