    Boken om San Michele av Axel Munthe är en av de svenska böcker som fick störst spridning i världen under 1900-talet. Den skrevs ursprungligen på engelska men översattes till svenska av författaren. Den är en slags memoar med en självbiografisk ryggrad och fiktiva inslag, där Munthe tagit sig stor frihet med förläggandet av händelser i tid och rum. Han har dessutom valt att utelämna Drottning Victoria, vars personliga läkare han var i över trettio år, helt ur berättelsen. AXEL MUNTHE [1857-1949] var en svensk läkare. Efter examen i filosofi och medicin arbetade han i Paris och Rom. Sedan flyttade han till Capri, där han behandlade fattiga medborgare utan betalning, och byggde villa San Michele, som i dag tillhör Svenska institutet. Under 1890-talet blev han den svenska kronprinsessan Victorias livläkare, en tjänst han innehade fram till hennes död.

Axel Martin Fredrik Munthe (1857 -1949) è stato uno psichiatra e scrittore svedese. Dopo avere avviato la sua carriera in ambito medico presso la Casa Reale di Svezia, nel 1884 si trasferisce a Capri per curare i malati di colera, colpiti dalla tremenda epidemia che aveva decimato la città. Durante questo periodo redige "Lettere da una città dolente", le cui vicende furono poi riprese nella sua opera magna "Storia di San Michele". Tra gli altri scritti ricordiamo "Piccoli schizzi", "Vagabondaggio" e "Croce rossa e croce di ferro".
