  • Joan Jonas

A conceptually innovative take on Jonas' performances and installations Published in conjunction with the first major US museum show of Joan Jonas' art in nearly 15 years, this volume breaks new ground by contextualizing and expanding understandings of Jonas' body of work through three thematic approaches: the critical notions of gender, being and otherness; the politics of landscape and ecology; and new conceptions of medium specificity and un-specificity. These themes serve as a framework through which to address the rich vocabulary of Jonas' performances, sculptures, drawings and installations from the early 1970s until today. Inspired by the format of a reader, the monograph presents new writing and scholarship, excerpts from Douglas Crimp's final interview, as well as a selection of drawings and sketches from Jonas' notebooks, including never-before-published drawings created during the coronavirus lockdown. Born and based in New York, Joan Jonas (born 1936) has taught at UCLA School of the Arts, in Stuttgart, Germany, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she is a professor emerita. She has lived and worked in Greece, Morocco, India, Germany, Holland, Iceland, Poland, Japan, Italy, Hungary and Ireland.

  • Yume No Okiru

"Yume No Okiru" is a psychological thriller that intricately weaves together the lives of Neiltom Yume and Francesca Okiru, exploring themes of love, power, vulnerability, and the complex depths of the human psyche. The narrative unfolds through therapeutic sessions with Dr. Francesca Okiru, offering profound insights into Neiltom's existential uncertainties, the revelation of his immortality, and the psychological toll of ambition and personal turmoil. While the story follows different nuances and plot lines such as the almost supernatural and thriller elements, it is deeply intertwined with psychology. Each chapter seamlessly transitions between the narrative and therapeutic sessions, revealing complex psychological patterns and motivations that drive the characters' actions and decisions. The characters' responses to these sessions illuminate their psychological development, creating a dynamic interplay between plot progression and psychological exploration. The story delves into the realms of clinical psychology, blending elements of romance and the mysterious depths of our minds, to create a compelling narrative that keeps readers captivated. Dreamlike sequences, philosophical debates, and gripping plot twists drive the narrative forward, exploring themes such as trust, deception, trauma, indoctrination, and the impact of past actions on present decisions. It's important to note that "Yume No Okiru" addresses sensitive topics such as trauma, indoctrination, abusive and violent behaviour, and the psychological dynamics of an antagonist who exhibits sadistic tendencies rooted in childhood trauma and indoctrination. These elements are integral to the narrative and contribute to a deeper exploration of human resilience, vulnerability, and the transformative power of dreams, love and fate. Yume No Okiru is the second novel by British-German author J. Joans, following his bestselling romance debut, Alesiena. Written during his move to Japan, the novel draws deeply from Joans's personal journey, offering an authentic and immersive narrative. As the story unfolds, it weaves a nuanced understanding of both Japanese and British cultures, enriching the chapters with emotional depth and cultural insight

  • Joan Crawford: The Essential Biography

" Joan Crawford: The Essential Biography explores the life and career of one of Hollywood's great dames. She was a leading film personality for more than fifty years, from her beginnings as a dancer in silent films of the 1920s, to her portrayals of working-class shop girls in the Depression thirties, to her Oscar-winning performances in classic films such as Mildred Pierce. Crawford's legacy has become somewhat tarnished in the wake of her daughter Christina's memoir, Mommie Dearest, which turned her into a national joke. Today, many picture Crawford only as a wire hanger-wielding shrew rather than the personification of Hollywood glamour. This new biography of Crawford sets the record straight, going beyond the gossip to find the truth about the legendary actress. The authors knew Crawford well and conducted scores of interviews with her and many of her friends and co-stars, including Frank Capra, George Cukor, Nicholas Ray, and Sidney Greenstreet. Far from a whitewash -- Crawford was indeed a colorful and difficult character -- Joan Crawford corrects many lies and tells the story of one of Hollywood's most influential stars, complete with on-set anecdotes and other movie lore. Through extensive interviews, in-depth analysis, and evaluation of her films and performances -- both successes and failures -- Lawrence J. Quirk and William Schoell present Crawford's story as both an appreciation and a reevaluation of her extraordinary life and career. Filled with new interviews, Joan Crawford tells the behind-the-scenes story of the Hollywood icon. Lawrence J. Quirk is the author of many books on film, including Bob Hope: The Road Well-Traveled. William Schoell is the author of several entertainment-related books, including Martini Man: The Life of Dean Martin.
