Train of Thought
I'm wondering if anyone can recommend some family situation type novels. For instance, I love and have read most of the books by Anne Tyler. I want some books that deal with internal family relationships and addresses the faults/strengths of each member of the family. I rather read a contemporary well written adult fiction book that doesn't have too much outside romantic forces (I.e. girlfriend/boyfriend) unless it's tied in well. Thanks for the suggestions
Chrissy
Linda Gillard's 'A Lifetime Burning'.A compelling read. Anthony Burgess' 'Earthly Powers'. A book I would mark as probably one of my favourites, but it may be a bit too epic / vast for what you are seeking.
Inver
The Shell Seekers ~ Rosamunde Pilcher is quite good.
Kidsmum
A Suitable Boy Vikram Seth although it does have a romantic element to it I really enjoyed it
Train of Thought
Thanks for the suggestions! Could I get maybe 1-2 more books? Some of the ones listed I couldn't find on my local library online catalog and my university also doesn't have them. Thanks
Linda Gillard
Try the Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard. There are 4 books and the first is THE LIGHT YEARS. (Strictly speaking they are not contemporary as they are set in WWII and were written in the 80s/90s. But highly recommended. She writes wonderfully about children. Other suggestions: Maile Meloy's LIARS AND SAINTS THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE by Susan Howatch (covers several generations) SOMEONE AT A DISTANCE by Dorothy Whipple (1953) BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE MUSEUM by Kate Atkinson TALKING TO THE DEAD by Helen Dunmore THE BLACKWATER LIGHTSHIP by Colm Toibin
mtjm
The Restoration Novels by Terri Blackstock I believe they are... The LAST LIGHT, The LOST LIGHT The TRUE LIGHT And DAWNS LIGHT... All about a family, when the power goes out all around the world... Doesnt sound great, but once you read them you will love them.
Bookster
I'm an Anne Tyler fan as well, I was hooked after reading "Saint Maybe" a long time ago.
Ravenwood
Notes from an Exhibition by Patrick Gale A wonderful book - flits back & forth through time, different chapters from the perspective of the different family members of a renowned but mentally unstable artist... possibly sounds a bit grim, but I found it strangely uplifting
