chesilbeach
For lots of us, Easter is a time for treats … Easter eggs, hot cross buns, Easter biscuits, simnel cake to name just a few. One of my favourite memories of growing up was our Good Friday starting with my dad treating us to toasted hot cross buns and tea for breakfast, and then having the whole four days together and having fun. We've started making our own hot cross buns a couple of years ago, after seeing Paul Hollywood make them on an Easter special of the Great British Bake Off. They have apple in them as well as dried fruit giving them an added fresher flavour, but toasting them always brings back fantastic memories of Dad treating us to breakfast. We don't do Easter eggs, although my OH will sometimes buy a box of Cadbury's creme eggs, we haven't bothered this year. Do you have any particular traditional Easter foods you always have, or something special you're looking forward to trying out this year? What are your Easter treats? muggle not
I lived in a very small town when I was a kid growing up. There were a couple families that homemade coconut crème candy eggs and also my favorite....fruit and nut and sold them. They were soooo good. My grandparents used to make the prettiest colored Easter eggs. Nowadays I have to watch my sugar intake so I forego most sweets. However, we have ham, potato salad, home made baked beans, pickled eggs, and asparagus for Easter dinner along with a couple bottles of nice wine....a Riesling for my OH and a Pinot Noir for me.. Edit : my OH scratched baked corn and replaced it with asparagus. Edited April 1, 2015 by muggle not
poppyshake
Like you Claire, if I don't have hot cross buns then it's not Easter. I do tend to eat too many of them on the lead up though. I'd be happy actually if they made hot cross buns only available for the Easter holidays .. it would be more special (same with mince pies) .. I have no willpower and as soon as they start heavily promoting them I'm sunk We always do eggs .. of course we do Easter eggs don't seem to taste as good as they did when I was small .. that might be my rose coloured glasses .. not sure. When I was a child and then later, until we all moved away, Mum always did a buffet lunch on Easter Monday .. mostly salad and a cold chicken or something. Usually a chocolate cake too. I've never ever eaten Simnel cake .. not sure I'd like it though I do like marzipan. I saw Paul making those hot cross buns on the Easter Bake Off .. they looked scrummy
Athena
I'm getting hungry just reading your posts! I'll be making Easter buns (both 'white' and 'wholegrain / brown') as per our family tradition (they're buns in shapes that we make ourselves, I always make at least a few 'braids' in there as that's traditional, as well as an Easter basket shaped bun (with eggs).). We usually have an Easter brunch on both Sunday and Monday (in the Netherlands known as 'Eerste Paasdag' or First Easter Day and 'Tweede Paasdag' or Second Easter Day), with the buns, 'paasstol' (I don't like this personally), a boiled egg from our own chicken, and as dessert a little Easter chocolate (ie. in the form of a chicken, baby chicken, bunny, or an Easter egg). Traditionally, I usually have a bun with the boiled egg, and another bun with powdered sugar. You can put other things on the buns too, sweet or savoury, I just really like them with powdered sugar and I hardly ever eat powdered sugar the rest of the year so it's nice to have it then. On occasion we have mixed things in with the buns while making them, such as little bits of chocolate or herbs or nuts and seeds. I don't know yet if we'll do anything like that this year, I hadn't really thought about it until I started to type this post, so I'll see what I feel like when I start making the buns. My mum bought me some moulds for Easter cupcakes, that I might use to make cupcakes with for this weekend too. My mum used to bake a cake when I was a child, using a special Easter mould, but since it's so old I believe the last time we used it it didn't stay upright so well (it's a cake completely in the shape of a lamb, the mould consists of several pieces you have to stick together). This year we're also going to have a nice dinner on Sunday. We don't normally have a special dinner on the Easter weekend, but I've really been wanting to eat 'gourmet' again the past while, so I planned to have it with Michael and we offered my parents that they could join us. My mum has invited my brother and his girlfriend too, so we'll be having gourmet with the six of us. I look forward to that too. I hope you all have a lovely Easter weekend ! muggle not
I just ordered a half Lemon Cake for Easter. Take a look especially at the chocolate cakes and fruity cakes. So many great cakes. I am off my diet for one day. http://maxieb.com/fruity-cakes
chesilbeach
OH made our hot cross buns yesterday, but they weren't ready until lunchtime, so couldn't toast them for breakfast, but there's enough for a few days, so I'll be having them toasted for breakfast this morning. We had a couple hot out of the oven with a bit of butter yesterday, and they were delicious.
